The recently released Periodic Labour Force Survey Report 2022-23 by the Ministry of Statistics and Programme Implementation on October 9, 2023, highlights a notable improvement in the Female Labour Force Participation Rate (FLFPR) in India. According to the ‘usual status’ concept of measuring labour force participation, the FLFPR has increased by a significant 4.2 percentage points, reaching 37.0% in 2023.

This improvement in the female labour force participation rate is attributed to the focused agenda set by the Government to enhance women’s empowerment through comprehensive policy initiatives. These initiatives encompass various stages of women’s lives, including extensive programs for girls’ education, skill development, entrepreneurship facilitation, and workplace safety. The government’s policies and legislations in these domains are aligned with the overarching goal of promoting ‘women-led development.’ This positive trend indicates progress towards achieving long-term socio-economic and political development for women in the country.
