Vice Admiral Tarun Sobti AVSM, VSM, a seasoned Navigation and Direction Specialist, has assumed the crucial role of Deputy Chief of the Naval Staff. With over 35 years of dedicated service, Vice Admiral Sobti brings a wealth of experience to his new appointment.
Throughout his illustrious career, he has commanded various vessels, including the Missile Boat INS Nishank, Missile Corvette INS Kora, and Guided Missile Destroyer INS Kolkata. His expertise extends to both ashore and afloat roles, showcasing his comprehensive understanding of naval operations. Noteworthy milestones in his career include significant staff appointments in the Directorate of Staff Requirements and Directorate of Personnel. He also served as the Naval attache at the Embassy of India in Moscow.
VAdm Sobti’s achievements include key positions such as Deputy Commandant and Chief Instructor at the Indian Naval Academy, Ezhimala, and Flag Officer Commanding Eastern Fleet after being promoted to the rank of Rear Admiral in 2019. Following his elevation to Vice Admiral in 2021, he assumed the role of Director General Project Seabird before taking up his current position as Deputy Chief of Naval Staff at NHQ MoD.
Recognizing his exceptional contributions, VAdm Sobti was honored with the Vishisht Seva Medal in 2020 and the Ati Vishisht Seva Medal in 2022 by the Hon’ble President of India. He succeeds Vice Admiral Sanjay Mahindru, who retired after an illustrious service of over 38 years. VAdm Mahindru’s tenure witnessed significant milestones that enhanced India’s maritime capabilities and operational effectiveness, along with successful strategic cooperation initiatives with friendly foreign nations.
