Shri Tanmay Chakrabarty IAS (West Bengal 2006) presently Director- ESI Scheme, Labour Department has been transferred and posted as Secretary- Mass Education Extension & Library Services Department with additional charge of Secretary – School Education Department. West Bengal.
Shri Tanmay Chakrabarty is a senior Indian Administrative Service (IAS) officer of the West Bengal cadre, recognized for his extensive experience in district administration, employment generation, tourism, and public governance. Over nearly two decades of public service, he has successfully handled a wide range of assignments across the State Government, demonstrating strong administrative leadership, policy implementation capabilities, and a commitment to citizen-centric governance.
An alumnus of the University of Calcutta, Shri Chakrabarty holds a Bachelor of Science (B.Sc.) degree with specialization in Technology, graduating with First Division. His academic background, coupled with his practical administrative experience, has enabled him to address complex governance challenges with efficiency and innovation.
Currently, Shri Chakrabarty serves as Director, Employment, Government of West Bengal, a position he has held since 18 November 2019. In this important role, he is responsible for overseeing employment-related initiatives, skill development programmes, career guidance services, employment exchanges, and implementation of policies aimed at enhancing employability and creating livelihood opportunities across the State. His leadership contributes significantly to strengthening the employment ecosystem and facilitating better coordination between job seekers, employers, and government agencies.
Prior to his current assignment, Shri Chakrabarty briefly served as Joint Secretary, Tourism Department, where he contributed to policy implementation and promotion of tourism in West Bengal. He also held the additional responsibility of Managing Director, West Bengal Tourism Development Corporation, from 2017 to 2019. During this tenure, he played an important role in promoting tourism infrastructure, improving visitor facilities, and supporting initiatives to position West Bengal as an attractive domestic and international tourist destination.
A substantial part of Shri Chakrabarty’s career has been devoted to district administration. He served as District Collector and District Magistrate, Malda, one of West Bengal’s key districts, where he was responsible for maintaining law and order, implementing development programmes, overseeing disaster management, land administration, and ensuring effective delivery of public services. Prior to this, he served as District Magistrate in another district, where he successfully managed developmental initiatives, revenue administration, and welfare programmes while coordinating multiple government departments.
His earlier assignments include serving as Additional District Magistrate, Jalpaiguri, where he handled both district administration and development administration. These roles provided him with extensive exposure to grassroots governance, rural development, infrastructure projects, and implementation of flagship government schemes.
During the early years of his IAS career, Shri Chakrabarty also served as Officer on Special Duty (OSD) to the Minister, Home Department, and later as Under Secretary in the Home Department, where he gained valuable experience in state-level policy formulation and administrative coordination. His field assignments as Sub-Divisional Officer (SDO), North 24 Parganas, Executive Magistrate, Paschim Medinipur, and Assistant Collector & Assistant Magistrate, Bardhaman, further strengthened his understanding of district governance, revenue administration, and public service delivery.
Throughout his career, Shri Tanmay Chakrabarty has consistently demonstrated the ability to manage diverse administrative responsibilities spanning employment, tourism, district governance, land administration, and public policy implementation. His balanced approach to governance, coupled with his commitment to transparency, efficiency, and inclusive development, has made him a respected administrator within the West Bengal Government.
With rich experience in both field administration and policy-making, Shri Chakrabarty continues to contribute meaningfully to the Government of West Bengal’s efforts to promote employment opportunities, strengthen public institutions, and improve governance. His leadership in the Employment Directorate remains vital in addressing emerging workforce challenges and enhancing employment prospects for the youth of the State.
