Sundarraj P IPS appointed as IG- National Investigation Agency
Shri Sundarraj P IPS (Chhattisgarh 2003) has been appointed as Inspector General in National Investigation Agency (NIA).
The Inspector General (IG) in the National Investigation Agency (NIA) holds a pivotal leadership position in India’s premier counter-terrorism investigation agency. Functioning under the Ministry of Home Affairs, Government of India, the IG plays a crucial role in supervising high-profile investigations, strengthening national security, and ensuring the effective implementation of the agency’s mandate to combat terrorism and other offences affecting the sovereignty, security, and integrity of the nation.
As a senior officer, the IG provides strategic direction and operational oversight to multiple investigation units across the country. The role involves monitoring sensitive cases related to terrorism, terror financing, organised crime with national and international linkages, explosives, cyber-enabled terrorism, and offences investigated under the National Investigation Agency Act and other specified laws. The IG ensures that investigations are conducted professionally, impartially, and in accordance with established legal procedures.
A key responsibility of the IG is supervising investigation teams handling complex and multi-jurisdictional cases. These investigations often require close coordination with State Police, Central Armed Police Forces, intelligence agencies, forensic laboratories, financial investigation agencies, and other departments of the Government of India. The IG facilitates seamless cooperation among these stakeholders to ensure timely collection of evidence and successful prosecution of offenders.
The Inspector General also oversees operational planning, case reviews, resource management, and deployment of personnel under his or her jurisdiction. Regular monitoring of investigation progress, adherence to timelines, and maintenance of high investigative standards are essential aspects of the position. The IG provides guidance to subordinate officers in handling technically challenging and nationally significant cases.
Given the transnational nature of many security threats, the IG frequently coordinates with international law enforcement agencies and foreign counterparts through established government channels. This cooperation assists in gathering intelligence, tracing financial transactions, identifying cross-border networks, and facilitating legal assistance in investigations involving international dimensions.
Technology has become an indispensable component of modern counter-terrorism investigations. The IG promotes the use of advanced forensic science, cyber investigation tools, digital evidence analysis, financial intelligence, and data-driven investigative techniques to strengthen the agency’s capabilities. Capacity building through specialised training and professional development of investigating officers also forms an important part of the IG’s responsibilities.
The Inspector General contributes to policy formulation by providing operational feedback and recommending measures to enhance investigative effectiveness, inter-agency coordination, and institutional preparedness against emerging security challenges. The officer also represents the agency in high-level meetings, security reviews, and coordination mechanisms concerning national security and counter-terrorism.
The office of the Inspector General in the National Investigation Agency demands exceptional professional competence, integrity, leadership, and sound judgment. Through effective supervision of investigations, inter-agency collaboration, and adoption of modern investigative practices, the IG contributes significantly to safeguarding India’s national security. The position remains integral to the NIA’s mission of delivering professional, impartial, and legally robust investigations while strengthening the country’s overall counter-terrorism framework and criminal justice system.
