Shri Rakesh Verma IAS (Punjab 1993) has taken over as the Director General of the India International Institute of Democracy and Election Management (IIIDEM), New Delhi. A distinguished technocrat-bureaucrat, Shri Verma holds a B.Tech degree in Computer Science and Engineering from the prestigious Indian Institute of Technology (IIT), Delhi. His academic and professional journey reflects a unique blend of technological acumen and administrative foresight.
Prior to this appointment, Shri Verma served as Additional Secretary in the Department of Water Resources, River Development & Ganga Rejuvenation, Ministry of Jal Shakti, where he played a pivotal role in advancing national priorities related to sustainable water management and river rejuvenation. His tenure at the Ministry of Tourism, both as Additional Secretary and Joint Secretary, was marked by innovative policy interventions and efforts to strengthen India’s global tourism footprint.
A seasoned administrator with over three decades of rich and varied experience, Shri Verma has held several high-impact positions across central and state governments. These include key roles in governance reforms, information technology, industries and commerce, environment, urban development, technical education, and municipal administration. His leadership as CEO of the Bureau of Investment Promotion and Principal Secretary in departments such as Environment, Governance Reforms, and Technical Education in Punjab was widely lauded for driving systemic improvements and citizen-centric reforms.
Known for his strategic thinking, result-oriented approach, and deep commitment to institutional excellence, Shri Rakesh Verma is expected to bring renewed energy and vision to IIIDEM—an institution under the Election Commission of India dedicated to training, research, and capacity building in the field of electoral management and democratic governance.
