President addressed 62nd convocation of ICAR – Indian Agricultural Research Institute

The ICAR-Indian Agricultural Research Institute celebrated its 62nd convocation on February 9, 2024, in the presence of the Chief Guest, the President of India, Smt Droupadi Murmu.

The President acknowledged the unparalleled contribution of the ICAR-Indian Agricultural Research Institute (IARI) in achieving food security for India. The institute has been instrumental in translating agricultural research into practical solutions on the ground. Highlighting the institute’s achievements, the President mentioned the development of over 200 new technologies. Additionally, IARI has contributed significantly by creating more than 100 varieties and securing over 100 patents between 2005 and 2020.

Emphasising the importance of agriculture in India, the President noted that a substantial population depends on agriculture for their livelihood, and the sector significantly contributes to the country’s GDP. The President expressed satisfaction with the government’s efforts to boost farmers’ income, promote innovative agricultural practices, and enhance irrigation systems. The substantial increase in Minimum Support Prices (MSP) for all crops is a crucial step towards providing income security to farmers.

Acknowledging the challenges faced by farmers, particularly those living in poverty, the President stressed the urgency to address issues related to fair pricing for agricultural produce. The goal is to empower farmers to transition from a life of poverty to prosperity.The President expressed confidence that as India progresses towards becoming a developed nation by 2047, farmers will play a pioneering role in this transformative journey. The vision includes ensuring that farmers receive fair prices for their produce, contributing to their economic well-being.

The President’s address underscores the pivotal role of agricultural research institutions like IARI in shaping the future of India’s agriculture and ensuring the prosperity of its farming community.
