PM announces 500 Cr assistance for flood hit Bihar

Prime Minister Narendra Modi has announced immediate assistance of Rs 500 crore to flood ravaged Bihar. He held detailed review meeting with Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar over relief operations, compensation and rehabilitation work in flood affected areas.

Mr. Modi said, 2 lakh rupees each will be paid next to the kin of those who died in flood related incidents. Fifty thousand rupees each will be given to injured persons.The Prime Minister said, more assistance will be given after assessing the damage. A central team will visit to Bihar to assess the damage caused by flood. Mr Modi assured that all possible help will be extended to the state to tackle flood.

The Prime Minister also stressed upon the immediate payment of crop insurance amount to the farmers of the flood affected areas.

Earlier today, Mr Modi undertook an aerial survey of the worst-affected bordering districts of Araria, Purnea, Katihar and Kishanganj to take stock of the flood situation. Chief Minister Nitish Kumar and Deputy Chief Minister Sushil Kumar Modi accompanied the Prime Minister during aerial survey.

Over one crore seventy lakh people in 21 districts are affected by recent floods. 415 have, so far, lost their lives.

The situation continues to be grim in Muzaffarpur, Samastipur and Darbhanga. Urban areas of Muzaffarpur have been inundated following the breach of Tirhut Canal. Turbulent water of Burhi Gandak is posing a threat to the embankment in Samastipur. Surging water of Bagmati is spreading in new areas of Darbhanga.

Rail traffic on Darbhanga-Samastipur section continues to be disrupted.
