Ms. Nagma Mohamed Mallick IFS (1991) presently Indian Ambassador to the Republic of Poland, has been appointed as the next Ambassador of India to Japan.
Ms. Nagma Mohamed Mallick, an accomplished diplomat with over three decades of experience, has represented India with distinction in diverse capacities across the globe. Her career reflects a rare combination of professional excellence, cultural sensitivity, and a deep commitment to advancing India’s diplomatic, strategic, and developmental interests.
Ms. Mallick began her diplomatic journey in Paris, where she served in the Embassy of India to the French Republic and the Indian Mission to UNESCO. Her early years in the service were marked by a deep engagement with multilateral diplomacy and cultural cooperation, laying a strong foundation for her illustrious career.
In New Delhi, Ms. Mallick held several key positions within the Ministry of External Affairs. She served as Desk Officer in the West Europe Division, and later as a member of the personal staff of the then Prime Minister, Mr. I.K. Gujral, at the Prime Minister’s Office. She went on to become the first woman Deputy Chief of Protocol (Ceremonial), a milestone that highlighted both her professional acumen and her pioneering spirit.
Her overseas assignments have been equally impressive. Ms. Mallick served in India’s Missions in Nepal and Sri Lanka as First Secretary and Counsellor, respectively, before taking on the role of Deputy Spokesperson for the Ministry of External Affairs upon her return to Delhi. As Director in the Eurasia Division, she oversaw India’s relations with Russia and the CIS countries, a role demanding strategic foresight and diplomatic finesse. From July 2010 to September 2012, she served as Deputy Chief of Mission at the Embassy of India in Thailand, further strengthening India’s engagement with Southeast Asia.
Ms. Mallick has also served as Ambassador of India to the Republic of Tunisia (2012–2015) and as High Commissioner to Brunei Darussalam (2015–2018). Her leadership in these roles was marked by deep engagement with local governments, dynamic promotion of Indian culture and trade, and an emphasis on fostering people-to-people connections.
In her subsequent roles at headquarters, Ms. Mallick led the Policy Planning Division (2019–2020) and later served as Additional Secretary (Africa) (2020–2021), where she supervised India’s ties with Eastern and Southern African nations and contributed to strengthening India’s pan-African partnerships. Since September 2021, she has been serving as Ambassador of India to the Republic of Poland, where she has played an instrumental role in expanding bilateral relations, promoting trade and investment, and fostering cultural exchange.
A graduate in English Literature and a postgraduate in Sociology, Ms. Mallick’s academic background complements her nuanced understanding of global affairs. Fluent in English, French, Hindi, Urdu, and Malayalam, she embodies the multicultural ethos of Indian diplomacy.
