Shri M A Siddique IAS (Tamil Nadu 1995) has been empanelled as Secretary at the Centre.

Shri M. A. Siddique is a senior officer of the Indian Administrative Service known for his extensive administrative experience in public finance, urban infrastructure development, district administration, and governance at both the state and central levels. With a career spanning more than two decades, he has held several key leadership positions in the Government of Tamil Nadu as well as the Government of India. Academically accomplished, Shri Siddique holds a Bachelor of Technology degree in Electronics with First Division, reflecting a strong technical background that has complemented his administrative responsibilities, particularly in areas involving infrastructure and modernization initiatives.

At present, Shri M. A. Siddique is serving as Principal Secretary and Managing Director of the Metro Rail Project in Chennai, a position he assumed on 13 June 2022. In this role, he is responsible for overseeing one of the most significant urban infrastructure initiatives in Tamil Nadu, aimed at strengthening public transport systems and enhancing urban mobility in the Chennai metropolitan region. His responsibilities include policy planning, project execution, financial management, and coordination with various agencies involved in the development and expansion of the metro rail network. Under his leadership, the project continues to play a crucial role in improving sustainable transport infrastructure and addressing the growing mobility needs of the city.

Prior to this assignment, Shri Siddique served as Principal Secretary in the Commercial Taxes Department of the Government of Tamil Nadu from December 2019 to June 2022. In this capacity, he was responsible for overseeing the administration of indirect taxes and revenue collection systems within the state. His tenure focused on strengthening tax administration, improving compliance mechanisms, and enhancing the efficiency of revenue collection processes. Earlier, from August 2017 to December 2019, he served as Secretary in the Finance Department, where he dealt with matters related to government expenditure, fiscal management, and financial policy implementation.

Shri Siddique has also contributed significantly to the cultural and archival heritage sector of the state. From July 2014 to August 2017, he served as Commissioner of Archives Administration, where he was responsible for the preservation, modernization, and management of historical records and archival materials. His tenure in this department involved initiatives aimed at improving archival systems and strengthening institutional management of historical documentation.

At the national level, Shri Siddique has served in important roles within the Government of India. From August 2012 to June 2014, he worked as Private Secretary to the Union Minister in the Ministry of Finance, specifically in the Department of Expenditure. Prior to that, from June 2009 to July 2012, he served as Private Secretary to the Union Minister in the Ministry of Home Affairs. These assignments at the central government level provided him with valuable exposure to national policy formulation, inter-ministerial coordination, and high-level administrative decision-making. Earlier, he also served as Deputy Secretary in the Department of Expenditure in the Ministry of Finance from March 2008 to June 2009.

At the state level, Shri Siddique has held several important field and administrative positions. He served as District Collector of Sivagangai from 2006 to 2008 and earlier as District Collector of Dharmapuri from 2002 to 2004. In these roles, he was responsible for district governance, development administration, law and order coordination, and implementation of government welfare schemes at the grassroots level. His tenure as District Collector helped strengthen administrative outreach and development initiatives in these districts.

Earlier in his career, he served as Director in the Department of Archaeology from 2004 to 2006, where he worked on the preservation and promotion of historical monuments and archaeological heritage in Tamil Nadu. He also served in the Finance Department of the state government as Deputy Secretary and Under Secretary between 1998 and 2002, handling financial administration and policy matters.

Throughout his career, Shri M. A. Siddique has demonstrated versatility and leadership across multiple sectors including finance, taxation, culture, infrastructure, and district administration. His experience at both the state and central levels, combined with his technical academic background, has enabled him to contribute effectively to policy formulation, administrative reforms, and the development of large-scale public infrastructure projects. His current role in leading the Chennai Metro Rail Project reflects his continued commitment to advancing urban development and improving public services in Tamil Nadu.
