The Rajasthan Police, as we know it today, emerged through a process of gradual unification following India’s independence in 1947. With the integration of 563 princely states into the Indian Union, the state of Rajasthan was formed in phases. The Matsya Union—comprising Alwar, Bharatpur, Dholpur, and Karauli—was the first to merge on 18th March 1948. Soon after, other princely states such as Banswara, Bundi, Kota, Udaipur, and Tonk followed. The final major unification occurred on 31st March 1949, with the inclusion of Jaipur, Jodhpur, Bikaner, and Jaisalmer, leading to the formation of Greater Rajasthan. The present-day Rajasthan took shape fully in 1956.
Before unification, these princely states maintained independent police forces that varied significantly in size, resources, and administrative procedures. Following the merger, these fragmented forces were integrated to form a unified law enforcement body—the Rajasthan Police.
Initially, Rajasthan Police was led by officers on deputation from the Indian Police Service. The first Inspector General of Police (IGP) was Shri R. Banerji, who assumed office on 7th April 1949. He played a pivotal role in standardizing operations, drafting the Rajasthan Police Regulations, and laying down the foundation for a cohesive police structure.
A major milestone was the formation of the Rajasthan Police Service (RPS) in January 1951. This allowed for the recruitment and appointment of officers from across the state, strengthening local policing and administration. Over time, Rajasthan Police evolved into a professional force known for maintaining law and order, handling civil unrest, and ensuring internal security in the largest state of India by area.
With its historical legacy and modern policing capabilities, Rajasthan Police continues to serve with the motto: “Committed to Serve”.
