Shri Gajanan Mallya IRSME (1979) has assumed charge as General Manager, South Central Railway (SCR) on 4th February, 2019. He belongs to the Indian Railway Service of Mechanical Engineers (IRSME) and made his entry into the cadre through Special Class Railway Apprentice 1979 batch. Prior to this assignment, he was serving as Director, Indian Railway Institute of Mechanical and Electrical Engineering (IRIMEE), Jamalpur, Bihar.

Shri Gajanan Mallya’s academic qualifications include a AMIE (Associated Member of the Institution of Engineers) Degree in Mechanical Engineering (London); AMIE (India) Degrees in Electrical Engineering and Metallurgy, besides a Post Graduation Diploma in Industrial Engineering from National Institute of Industrial Engineering (NITIE), Mumbai.

He carries a rich working experience, having served in various capacities on Indian Railways. Amongst the posts he held are – Senior Deputy General Manager, SCR; Divisional Railway Manager, Ranchi Division, South Eastern Railway; Chief Project Manager, Integral Coach Factory (ICF); General Manager, Inspection, Rail India Technical and Economic Service (RITES); Senior Professor, IRIMEE; Secretary to General Manager, Senior Divisional Mechanical Engineer and Deputy Chief Mechanical Engineer, Southern Railway; Production Engineer, ICF & Production Engineer, Loco, Carriage & Wagon Workshops and Assistant Mechanical Engineer, South Central Railway.

As Director, IRIMEE, Shri Gajanan Mallya was instrumental in introducing Web-based learning process, upgraded the mandatory courses module and introduced new professional courses to meet the changing needs of the Railways. On SCR, as Senior Deputy General Manager he brought a sea change in the working of Vigilance Department by imbibing various system improvements to ensure prompt investigation of complaints and developed in-house software for maintaining data base of cases etc. His leadership came to the fore, when as Divisional Railway Manager, Ranchi Division on South Eastern Railway he led the Division to obtain five performance efficiency shields in various spheres, including in Safety, Mechanical and Civil Engineering Categories. In RITES, he successfully increased the turnover of the organization by three times in four years.
Shri Gajanan Mallya is the recipient of several Awards and prizes for his performance during his illustrious career on Indian Railways. He was bestowed with the Principal’s Medal of Merit at Railway Staff College, Vadodara for standing first with Distinction in the Foundation and Induction Courses. During his stint at ICF, he was the recipient of Awards for meritorious performance for three consecutive years between 1989-1991. His Outstanding performance earned recognition during Railway Week Celebrations – 1998, when he was conferred with the General Manager/ICF Award and Silver Medal. He is also the recipient of the Managing Director/RITES Award for developing new line of business and the highest honor on Indian Railways the Chairman Railway Board Award for good work done in implementation of Rajbhasha, Hindi on SCR.

He has completed various training programs in India and abroad. Amongst these are, a specialized “Training of Trainers” program at Administrative Staff College of India, Hyderabad; Advanced Strategic Management Program at Carnegie Mellon University, Pittsburgh, U.S.A and Advanced Training in Vigilance Investigation at the Sardar Vallabhai Patel National Police Academy, Hyderabad. He has visited the United Kingdom, Sweden, Germany, Tanzania, Brazil, Czech Republic, China and U.S.A on various occasions.
