What is Bloating?  Bloating is when your belly feels swollen after eating. It is accompanied by the feeling of heaviness and fullness for a temporary period of time. Please don’t confuse bloating with belly fat as fat may jiggle but bloating is more of feeling of tightness and one start feeling uncomfortable inside clothes. It is a common problem due to modern and sedentary lifestyle these days.

Also if, anybody who claims to give you a clear cut answer on how to deal with bloating is either lying, or is just ignorant on the topic. Unfortunately, we know very little about the gut and how to optimize its health, therefore it’s only possible to give you general recommendations that tend to help.

So, I am sharing few reasons why bloating actually happens. These reasons are not the end of the topic but you can try eliminating these probabilities and see if it works for you.

(I) Food intolerance – While full-blown food allergies are quite rare, slight-moderate sensitivities to certain foods are actually quite common. Dairy products, soy, gluten, yeast, corn, eggs, peanuts etc all comes in the list of allergenic foods. If you’re eating one of these (or other common culprit food) in high volumes at the moment, perhaps try making a note of foods which makes you feel uncomfortable just after you eat them, try eliminating them and see if it works.

(II) Poor eating habits & high alcohol consumption – You could be eating foods that your gut can handle perfectly well, but if you’re eating them to the point of severe discomfort, you will get bloated from them. This applies to fruits and veggies just as much as to junk-foods. Too much of refined and processed food also leads to bloating. So, next time make a promise to yourself and leave your stomach 20-30% empty even if the food is really tasty. Also make sure alcohol consumption is not really high and frequent as it can easily lead to bloating.

(III) Irritable bowel syndrome – It is an intestinal disorder causing pain in the stomach, wind & bloating, diarrhea and constipation. If bloating is a regular thing for you than best advice is to get a diagnosis done with a medical expert.

(IV) Water retention – If your water intake is less throughout the day, body tends to start retaining water. When you drink less water, our body plays smart and tries to retain whatever water is available for usage leading to bloating. Try to drink 5 liters of water daily especially in summers/humid conditions and your activity levels are higher or you sweat more compared to others.

(V) Other underlying reasons – Reasons such as hormonal fluctuations, high sodium intake, high stress levels and sedentary lifestyle, gastric issues all can lead to bloating. Apart from this there can be more reasons which are not listed here.

So, actually paying attention to your body’s signals can help greatly eliminate the likelihood of you ending up in painful bloating by the end of your meals. Some may need a diagnosis and some may not.
