India–Peru Diplomatic Relations | Expanding Strategic and Economic Partnership
India and Peru share warm and friendly diplomatic relations that have steadily strengthened over the decades through cooperation in trade, culture, education, mining, pharmaceuticals, and multilateral engagement. The bilateral relationship is marked by mutual respect, democratic values, and a shared commitment to economic development and international cooperation.
Diplomatic relations between India and Peru were formally established in 1963, laying the foundation for growing political and economic engagement between the two countries. Over the years, both nations have expanded cooperation across multiple sectors, supported by regular diplomatic dialogue, high-level visits, and increasing commercial interactions.
India maintains an Embassy in Lima, the capital of Peru, while Peru also has diplomatic representation in New Delhi. These missions play an important role in promoting bilateral cooperation, facilitating trade and investment, strengthening people-to-people exchanges, and encouraging cultural engagement between the two countries.
Economic and commercial ties form a major pillar of India–Peru relations. Peru is considered one of India’s important trading partners in Latin America. Bilateral trade has witnessed steady growth, particularly in sectors such as pharmaceuticals, automobiles, textiles, engineering goods, chemicals, agriculture, and information technology.
India imports minerals such as gold and copper from Peru, while Indian exports to Peru include vehicles, pharmaceuticals, machinery, textiles, chemicals, and manufactured goods. The mining sector has emerged as an important area of cooperation due to Peru’s vast mineral resources and India’s growing industrial demand.
Indian companies have shown increasing interest in Peru’s mining, energy, and infrastructure sectors. Similarly, Peruvian businesses are exploring opportunities in India’s expanding consumer market and manufacturing ecosystem. Both countries continue discussions on improving market access and enhancing trade facilitation measures.
Pharmaceutical cooperation is another important aspect of bilateral relations. Indian pharmaceutical companies are recognized in Peru for providing affordable and high-quality medicines, contributing to healthcare accessibility and medical cooperation between the two nations.
Cultural diplomacy has also played a meaningful role in strengthening India–Peru ties. Interest in Indian culture, yoga, Ayurveda, classical dance, and Indian cuisine has grown steadily in Peru. Cultural programs, academic exchanges, and International Day of Yoga celebrations have helped deepen people-to-people connections.
Both countries cooperate actively in multilateral forums including the United Nations, World Trade Organization (WTO), and other international institutions. India and Peru often support dialogue on issues related to sustainable development, climate change, economic cooperation, and global governance reforms.
Educational exchanges and academic collaborations are gradually expanding as well. Indian scholarship programs and technical cooperation initiatives have provided opportunities for Peruvian students and professionals to engage with Indian institutions under various capacity-building programs.
The relationship between India and Peru has also gained importance in the context of India’s growing engagement with Latin America. Peru serves as an important gateway for India’s outreach in the region, particularly in areas related to trade, mining cooperation, energy security, and strategic economic partnerships.
In recent years, both nations have emphasized strengthening cooperation in renewable energy, digital technologies, agriculture, tourism, and innovation. Discussions on expanding bilateral agreements and promoting greater business collaboration continue to contribute positively to the relationship.
India and Peru continue to maintain cordial and forward-looking diplomatic ties driven by economic cooperation, mutual interests, and expanding global engagement. As both countries seek to diversify trade partnerships and strengthen South-South cooperation, the India–Peru relationship is expected to witness further growth in the years ahead.
