Prof. Ashim Kumar Ghosh has been appointed as Governor of Haryana.
Prof. Ashim Kumar Ghosh, a seasoned academician and veteran leader of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) from West Bengal, was appointed as the Governor of Haryana on July 14, 2025. At 81, his appointment came as a surprise to many, marking a remarkable return to public life more than two decades after his retreat from active politics. He succeeds Bandaru Dattatreya, a senior BJP figure, who completed his tenure as Governor.
A soft-spoken and widely respected figure, Prof. Ghosh’s journey into politics was rooted in academia. He was formerly a professor at Shri Shikshayatan College in North Kolkata. His political career began in 1991 under the mentorship of senior BJP leader Prabhakar Tiwari. The same year, he contested the Kasipur Assembly seat but did not succeed. Nonetheless, his commitment and leadership qualities were soon recognized, leading to his appointment as the state secretary of the BJP in 1996 and later as the vice-president in 1998.
Prof. Ghosh took over as President of the West Bengal BJP in 1999, following the departure of Union Minister Tapan Sikdar from the post. During his tenure, which lasted until 2002, the BJP made notable organisational strides in the state. Though electoral dominance eluded the party at the time, Ghosh is credited with laying a strong foundation by building a disciplined cadre and strengthening the party’s grassroots presence. His narrow but symbolic win over senior leader Sukumar Bandyopadhyay in the 2000 internal elections highlighted his influence within party ranks.
After completing his term as state president, Prof. Ghosh gradually withdrew from frontline politics, though he remained active within the party’s national committee for a brief period. In recent months, he had re-engaged with party activities, especially following the appointment of Samik Bhattacharya as the West Bengal BJP president. His renewed presence in the political scene signalled his enduring relevance and commitment.
Prof. Ashim Kumar Ghosh now embarks on this significant constitutional role, bringing with him decades of wisdom, political insight, and a reputation for integrity and service.
