Akhilesh Kumar Singh IPS given extension as DIG- CBI
Shri Akhilesh Kumar Singh IPS (Maharashtra 2008) presently DIG- CBI has been given an extension in deputation tenure for a period of two years i.e. from 23.07.2026 to 22.07.2028 (7 years in total) .
The Deputy Inspector General (DIG) in the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) is a senior supervisory officer responsible for overseeing multiple investigation units, ensuring operational efficiency, and maintaining the highest standards of professionalism in the agency’s functioning. Positioned above the Superintendent of Police (SP) and below the Joint Director, the DIG plays a crucial role in guiding complex investigations, strengthening institutional coordination, and ensuring timely completion of high-profile cases.
A DIG supervises investigations into corruption, economic offences, bank frauds, cybercrime, organised crime, and special crimes that fall within the CBI’s jurisdiction. The officer reviews the progress of investigations handled by Superintendents of Police and their teams, provides strategic guidance, resolves operational challenges, and ensures that investigations comply with legal provisions, judicial directions, and established investigative procedures.
One of the DIG’s primary responsibilities is to monitor sensitive and high-value cases, ensuring that evidence is collected meticulously, investigations remain impartial, and charge sheets are filed within prescribed timelines. The officer also evaluates investigation reports, approves critical operational decisions, and coordinates with senior officers, prosecutors, forensic experts, financial regulators, vigilance organisations, and state police agencies whenever inter-agency collaboration is required.
Beyond investigations, the DIG is responsible for administrative supervision, manpower management, performance review, and capacity building within the units under their command. The officer promotes adherence to ethical standards, mentors subordinate officers, and ensures that investigative practices remain transparent, accountable, and legally sound. The DIG also contributes to policy implementation, resource allocation, and operational planning aimed at improving the effectiveness of the organisation.
The effectiveness of a DIG largely depends on strategic leadership, sound legal understanding, investigative experience, and the ability to manage complex, multi-dimensional cases. Strong decision-making, coordination, and supervisory skills enable the officer to maintain the quality and credibility of investigations while ensuring efficient utilisation of resources.
As a key leader within the Central Bureau of Investigation, the Deputy Inspector General plays an indispensable role in strengthening institutional integrity, combating corruption and financial crime, enhancing investigative excellence, and reinforcing public confidence in India’s premier investigative agency.
