IT Minister remarks on Japan’s interest in joining UPI

Minister of Electronics & IT, Railways, and Communications, Shri Ashwini Vaishnaw expressed gratitude towards the Japanese Digital Minister, Mr. KONO Taro, for his positive response to Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi’s Digital India vision. Mr. Vaishnaw acknowledged the traction that the Digital India vision has gained in various global forums, such as G20, SCO, and G7, emphasizing how it has democratized digital technology.

In an interview, Mr. KONO Taro, the Japanese Digital Minister, expressed interest in joining India’s UPI (Unified Payments Interface) payment system. He highlighted the recent G7 Digital Ministers’ meeting where Mr. Vaishnaw, the Indian Digital Minister, participated. He mentioned that Japan and India are actively working to promote digital cooperation between the two countries. Specifically, Japan is considering joining the Indian UPI system for payments and exploring possibilities of mutual recognition of e-ID (electronic identification) to enhance interoperability.

These statements indicate a positive engagement between India and Japan in the digital sphere, with both countries exploring avenues for collaboration and cooperation to strengthen their digital ecosystems.
