Coal earns 43% of Freight revenue for Railways, Foodgrains mere 9%

As per recently published data, during April-July’14 Indian Railways reported a 9.3% increase in revenues and 4.25% increase in volumes in commodity-wise freight traffic compared to same time last year. Railways emerged as the most preferred form of transportation for Coal, also earning the the most for the Indian Railway a staggering Rs 14,107 crores out of a total revenue of Rs 32,451 crores, or 43.5%  of the total earnings from freights during this period. Cement earned about 9.8%  of revenues whilst, Food grains the 3rd highest earner contribution a mere 8.7% .

Committee setup to suggest restructuring of FCI

The Government has decided to set up a High Level Committee (HLC) to advice on restructuring of FCI under chairmanship of Shanta Kumar MP.  HLC will submit its report to the Government within 3 months.

The committee comprises of Chief Secretary of Punjab and Chhattisgarh, Prof. G. Raghuram-Dean IIM Ahmedabad, Dr. Ashok Gulati- Ex Chairman, Commission Agricultural Costs & Prices, Prof. Gunmadi Nancharaiah-Dean of School of Economics Hyderabad, Shri C.Viswanath-CMD FCI and Shri Ram Sewak Sharma-Secretary (Electronics & IT).

The Committee will study crucial aspects affecting the operational efficiency of FCI. It will propose measures to improve the administrative, functional, financial and operational structure of FCI, along with ways to strengthen and integrate the supply chain, its MSP operations, storage, distribution and cost effective options of moving food grains and tracking of carriages, food security systems of India and technological intervention in management of foodgrains.

The HLC will prepare a Consultation Paper for circulation among the various stake holders as well as placing it in public domain to invite comments/suggestions.

M/s Accord Software & Systems Ltd., Bengaluru, under leadership of  J. M. Sundaresan (CEO) a Masters degree holder in Control Systems Engineering from IIT, Kharagpur for – indigenous design, development and production of advanced high dynamics GPS+GLONASS+GAGAN receivers with state-of-the-art technologies and features in multiple configurations to the specific requirements/ specifications of Indian Defence programmes in close coordination with DRDO laboratories.

M/s Aerospace Engineers, Salem, Tamil Nadu, for – technical expertise in absorbing technologies and delivery of high-precision and quality elastomeric products for use on various airborne systems developed by DRDO that include LCA, Lakshya, Nishant, Missiles, Life Saving Systems, aircrafts and helicopters.

M/s Krishna Industries, Mumbai, for –  indigenous production of “Bulb Bars” of various sections of DMR-249A grade steel, on industrial scale, in association with DRDO for construction of warships by devising ingenious roll design, rolling parameters and novel heat treatment technique.  Their sustained efforts have culminated in producing high quality bulb bars for the first time in the country, thereby meeting the requirements of the Indian Navy in a timely and cost effective manner.

The award ceremony was held at Kothari Auditorium, DRDO Bhawan at New Delhi.

DRDO AWARDS – 2013 for outstanding contribution in various areas of technology was given by the Prime Minister, Shri Narendra Modi, in presence of Defence Minister Shri Arun Jaitley, MoS Defence Rao Inderjeet Singh, MoS PMO Dr. Jitendra Singh, NSA Ajit Doval and Scientific Adviser to Defence Minister Shri Avinash Chander.

Whilst, Shri S Anantha Narayanan, Distinguished Scientist & Director Naval Physical & Oceanographic Laboratory, Kochi was presented with Technology Leadership Award, Emeritus Prof. S Mohan, IISc, Bengaluru and Prof. V Kamakoti, IIT Madras were presented Academy Excellence Awards.

PM dedicates Chutak hydropower station to the nation in Kargil

Prime Minister Narendra Modi while dedicating to the nation the 44MW Chutak hydropower station at Kargil, said about 30 percent of the population of the state of Jammu and Kashmir is displaced, and his Government is committed to rehabilitate them in a planned way. 
Addressing a public rally at Kargil, the Prime Minister recalled his visit to the town during the 1999 Kargil war. He said gunfire was heard in those days, where now we hear the sound of people clapping. He said the people of Kargil had supported the Indian Armed Forces during the war. He said he still recalled the excitement and patriotic fervour in the town when Tiger Hill was won. Today the people here wish to join the development mainstream.

The Prime Minister said it is time to change the old adage – Paani aur jawaani pahaad ke kaam nahin aate. He said through hydropower, the rivers (paani) is being harnessed for the benefit of the moutains. And electricity was not just for industry – but would also help the youth of the mountains hone their skills and find suitable employment, without having to migrate to urban areas.

He said the Government of India would provide Rs. 8000 crore additional funding for road projects in the state. He said the Leh-Kargil-Srinagar transmission line would boost education and employment opportunities in Kargil. He said he wished to make Kargil one of the fastest growing districts in the country. 

The Prime Minister said development is the sole solution to all problems. He said development is his Government`s priority, and maximum stress is being given to employment of youth. In this context, he spoke of Pashmina, saffron cultivation and value addition in apple cultivation. Dr. Arvind Gupta, IFS (79), is appointed as the Deputy National Security Advisor of India and Secretary, National Security Council Secretariat for a period of three years. He is currently the Director General in the Institute of Defence Studies & Analyses (IDSA). Before joining the Indian Foreign Service in 1979 he served at the Oil & Natural Gas Commission (1976) and at the State Bank of India (1976-79), apart from being a Visiting Member at the Tata Institute for Fundamental Research (1974-76). Dr.Gupta is a Ph.D in International Relations from Jawaharlal Nehru University and M.Sc. in Physics from Delhi University.

He joined as Director General, Institute for Defence Studies and Analyses (IDSA) on 5th January, 2012.

PM – full Central Government support for Kosi flood situation- NCMC coordinating

The Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi has expressed concern over Kosi flood situation in Bihar and directed that all possible assistance should be made available.The Cabinet Secretary Shri Ajit Seth has chaired three emergency meetings of National Crisis Management Committee (NCMC) since yesterday afternoon. Two meetings were held yesterday. One meeting was held today morning and another meeting is scheduled in the evening today.

Cabinets Secretary is in constant and direct touch with the State Chief Secretary. Following efforts have been coordinated with the concerned authorities:-

· 44,000 persons evacuated by the Bihar State authorities so far. State Administration has been urged to speed up this process. 107 camps set up. In addition, 30 cattle camps set up.
· Small assessment team of 6 persons – 2 from CWC, 2 from NDRF and 1 each from Indian Army and GSI – have reached Nepal last night to make initial assessment.
· Central Water Commission is doing a computer simulation exercise to assess the likely impact of sudden release of water.
· Water discharge so far is not alarming. But it cannot be predicted when the flow might increase suddenly. CWC is issuing advisories

· One AN-32 Aircraft has reached Delhi from Agra to carry persons and communication equipment to Purnia. 1 more standby at Agra.
· 2 Mi-17 helicopters each standby at Gorakhpur, Bagdogra and Barrackpore.
· 2 Chetaks and 4 MI-17 also moved to Bihta (near Patna).
· Naval diving teams in readiness.

Medical assistance
· 1 C-17 Aircraft ready to leave Palam at around 1600 hours carrying medical team comprising 25 persons (including 2 medical officers, 1 preventive medicine specialist and one medical specialist) and 30 MT load (stretchers, etc.).
· 20 civilian doctors from Government of India of different specialities from Delhi hospitals also leaving by this aircraft.

Communications
· 15 satellite phones given to the Bihar State authorities by the Government of India last night. NDRF teams also carrying satellite phones.
· Department of Spacewill also obtain relevant satellite inputs and start providing them from tomorrow onwards.
Foodgrains
· D/o Food has been asked to provide full assistance.
· FCI godowns have sufficient food grain stocks available in the areas likely to be affected.

Born on Feb 28, 1956, Warjri did his schooling from St. Edmund’s School in 1971 and graduated from St. Edmund’s College in 1976, further he pursued International Studies at the Jawaharlal Nehru University, New Delhi. Warjri, held many important positions including being in-charge of Soil & Water Conservation and Forest and Environment departments, Chairman of Administrative Reforms and Commissioner UIDAI Meghalaya.
