NLCIL spends more than 75% of NLCIL CSR funds for Social Welfare Works in Cuddalore District – Shri R. Vikraman, Dir/HR/NLCIL.The works for desilting the Kothavachery Tank in Kurinjipadi Taluk of Cuddalore District were inaugurated by Shri R. Vikraman, Director (HR), NLCIL, on 10.10.2019. Speaking on the occasion, he informed that NLC India Limited is allocating three fourth of its CSR funds for various Community Development works in Cuddalore District.The Kothavachery Tank, created 113 years back by the British, is situated in Kurinjipadi Taluk and is the biggest Water body in the Taluk, spread over 166 acres catering to the agricultural needs of 354 hectares of farm lands. It may be noted that around 2500 farmers benefit through this Tank.
Acting on the requests of the local MLA, Shri M.R.K. Panneerselvam and recommended by the Cuddalore District Administration, the NLCIL management allocated Rs.3.08 crores for desilting the Kothavachery Tank. The work, undertaken through the CSR Department, envisages deepening of the Tank by digging up 1 crore 90 lakhs cubic feet of earth and raising the height of the banks using the excavated soil which will also strengthen the banks further. It has also been decided to repair/replace the sluice gates and shutters wherever necessary.
Speaking after inaugurating the desilting works, Shri R. Vikraman, Director/HR, NLCIL informed that NLCIL had spent several crores of Rupees to desilt and deepen water bodies located in Cuddalore district in the last 5 years. Because of this, a huge quantity of water flowing into the sea was saved and retained in the lakes/ponds/water bodies he said, pointing out that 75% of CSR funds were being utilized for Community Development initiatives within Cuddalore District.Thanking NLCIL for carrying out welfare works in the public interest, Shri M.R.K. Panneerselvam, MLA and former Minister of Government of Tamil Nadu, expressed his gratitude for the exemplary work of NLCIL in desilting, deepening and maintaining the Paravanar Lake by spending Rs. 25 crore, which helped in preventing damages caused by flooding of the Paravanar during rainy seasons.
Shri R.Mohan, CGM/CSR/NLCIL, Shri V. Ramachandran, GM/CSR/NLCIL, Senior officers of NLCIL, Officers of the TN Public Works Department and the general public participated in the function.It is to be noted that NLCIL has spent around Rs. 50 crores for desilting lakes in Cuddalore District during the last 5 years. In the current financial year, (2019-20), desilting works of water bodies, viz., Chokkankollai, Nathamedu, Kummidimoolai lakes including the present Kothavachery lake are taken up at a total cost of Rs. 7 crore.
