The PAN 2.0 Project is a major step forward in modernizing India’s financial infrastructure. With a ₹1,435 crore investment, this initiative aims to streamline the Permanent Account Number (PAN) and Tax Deduction and Collection Account Number (TAN) services, making them more user-friendly, efficient, and secure. The PAN 2.0 system is designed to enhance the digital experience for taxpayers, ensuring seamless access to all PAN/TAN-related services through a single unified portal. This marks a shift towards paperless, eco-friendly processes, with e-PAN issued free of cost and faster processing times.

Key Features of PAN 2.0:

  1. Unified Portal: All PAN/TAN services will now be available on a single platform, simplifying access and usage for taxpayers.
  2. Paperless Process: The system will minimize paperwork, creating a fully digital process for PAN and TAN services.
  3. Free Services: PAN allotment, updating, and corrections will be free, with e-PAN delivered digitally. Physical PAN cards will cost a nominal fee.
  4. Enhanced Security: A new PAN Data Vault will ensure greater protection of personal and demographic data.
  5. QR Code: PAN cards will include an enhanced dynamic QR code for validation, ensuring authenticity and easy access to PAN details through a QR reader.

Benefits of PAN 2.0:

  • Efficiency: The integration of different platforms into one will improve the speed and ease of service.
  • Security: Adopting international standards like ISO 27001 for security ensures the integrity of data.
  • Convenience: Simplified updates and a dedicated call centre will make it easier for taxpayers to resolve issues.

Key Changes:

  • Existing PAN cardholders are not required to apply for a new PAN unless they need to update or correct their details.
  • TAN (Tax Deduction and Collection Account Number) will continue to be a separate requirement for businesses responsible for TDS/TCS.

Global Standards:

The PAN 2.0 Project is designed to align with international best practices for digital governance and data security, ensuring a seamless experience for taxpayers. This initiative supports the Indian government’s vision of a Digital India, contributing to greater financial transparency, better tax compliance, and overall governance.

The PAN 2.0 system promises to make taxpayer services more accessible, efficient, and secure, setting a new benchmark for digital transformation in India’s tax system.

On November 27, 2024, General Upendra Dwivedi, Chief of the Army Staff (COAS), presented the prestigious President’s Colours to four battalions of the Mechanised Infantry at a solemn ceremony held at the Mechanised Infantry Centre and School (MIC&S), Ahilyanagar. The President’s Colours were awarded to the 26th and 27th Battalions of the Mechanised Infantry Regiment and the 20th and 22nd Battalions of the Brigade of The Guards, marking a significant milestone for these youngest battalions of the Indian Army.

The event was attended by a large number of veterans, military personnel, and civil dignitaries, highlighting the significance of the honour. The COAS reviewed the Colour Presentation Parade, commending the exceptional standards displayed by the battalions, both in marching and mounted contingents. He presented the Colours on behalf of the President of India, acknowledging their exemplary service and dedication.

In his address, General Dwivedi praised the Mechanised Infantry for its professionalism, valour, and operational proficiency. He noted the Arm’s remarkable contributions in major operations, including Op PAWAN, Op VIJAY, Op RAKSHAK, and Op SNOW LEOPARD, as well as its vital role in UN peacekeeping missions. The Mechanised Infantry, which was established in 1979, is celebrated for blending Infantry and Mechanised Forces, making it a key and versatile combat arm of the Indian Army.

The COAS emphasized the ongoing modernisation of the Mechanised Infantry, with the introduction of advanced systems such as Futuristic Infantry Combat Vehicles, Nag Missile Systems, Canister Launched Anti-Armour Systems, and Mini Remotely Piloted Aircrafts. These advancements, built on the foundation of self-reliance, ensure that the Mechanised Infantry remains a decisive force in future conflicts. General Dwivedi also highlighted the importance of the Indian Army’s decade of transformation and encouraged the units to contribute significantly to this ongoing transformation.

The presentation of the President’s Colours is a prestigious recognition, historically symbolizing a unit’s identity and achievements. Although originally serving as rallying points in battle, Colours now continue to inspire morale, motivation, and unity among troops. These ceremonial flags are awarded to units upon completing specified meritorious service, both in operations and peacetime.

In addition to presenting the Colours, the COAS also honoured four Veteran Achievers for their outstanding contributions to the welfare of ex-servicemen and society. He extended his best wishes to all ranks and their families and urged the Mechanised Infantry to uphold the highest standards of excellence, serving the Nation with dedication and in line with the core values of the Indian Army.

Indian Railways (IR) has made remarkable progress in the electrification of its Broad Gauge (BG) railway network, adopting a mission-driven approach. Since 2014-15, Indian Railways has completed the electrification of approximately 45,200 Route Kilometers (RKM), marking a significant increase in pace from 1.42 km/day (2004-14) to 19.7 km/day (2023-24). Currently, about 97% of the BG network stands electrified.

Electrification has proven to be a pivotal step in making railway operations more environmentally friendly and economical, with electric traction being approximately 70% cheaper than diesel traction. This transition not only reduces carbon emissions but also aligns with India’s broader goals of sustainability and energy efficiency.

To ensure the reliability of electric operations, Indian Railways has implemented a robust power supply system. This system includes:

  1. Connections to the National Grid through state and central transmission utilities.
  2. Redundant Power Sources at grid and traction substations to guarantee uninterrupted services.
  3. Multiple safeguards to mitigate potential power supply disruptions, ensuring the seamless operation of electric trains.

The substantial electrification progress underscores Indian Railways’ commitment to modernizing its infrastructure and enhancing operational efficiency while promoting sustainable practices.
