Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi will inaugurate the Khelo India University Games 2022 today. The Prime Minister has been actively promoting a culture of sports in the country and encouraging youth to participate in sports. The government has implemented various schemes to support young athletes and has worked towards strengthening the sports ecosystem in India. The organization of the Khelo India University Games is another important step in this direction.
The third edition of the Khelo India University Games will be held from May 25 to June 3, 2022, in Uttar Pradesh. The competitions will take place in Varanasi, Gorakhpur, Lucknow, and Gautam Buddha Nagar. More than 4,750 athletes from over 200 universities will participate in 21 different sports. The closing ceremony of the Games will be held in Varanasi on June 3.
The mascot of the Games is named Jitu, representing the Swamp Deer (Barasingha), which is the state animal of Uttar Pradesh.
