A US delegation, led by Ms. Heidi Shyu, Under Secretary (Research & Engineering) at the Department of Defence, engaged with the Innovations for Defence Excellence-Defence Innovation Organisation (iDEX-DIO) team under India’s Ministry of Defence at IIT Delhi on September 18, 2023. The iDEX-DIO team presented how iDEX is revolutionizing India’s defence innovation ecosystem, particularly in areas like Artificial Intelligence (AI), unmanned solutions, cybersecurity, and more. They showcased cutting-edge dual-use technologies developed by iDEX winners and defence innovation start-ups.

During the meeting, it was emphasized that the India-U.S. Defence Acceleration Ecosystem (INDUS-X) initiative will strengthen strategic technology partnerships and defence industrial cooperation. Two joint challenges have been finalized and will soon be launched by iDEX and Defence Innovation Unit (DIU) teams.

The showcase featured innovative solutions in information security, AI, Machine Learning-based imaging, maritime technologies, wireless communication, space technologies, and advanced sensors. Ms. Heidi Shyu commended the start-up showcase and suggested that the procurement of advanced technologies be considered under INDUS-X.

INDUS-X, a collaborative effort between iDEX and the US Department of Defence, aims to enhance the partnership between start-up ecosystems, businesses, and academic institutions from both countries. It encompasses various initiatives, including Joint Challenges, Innovation Partnership Program, Academia partnership, Joint Innovation Fund, and the establishment of Testing & Certification facilities in India. The INDUS-X event was highlighted in the Joint Statement of the two leaders during recent bilateral meetings.
