New Delhi, May 1, 2025 — Ms. Sujata Chaturvedi, a distinguished retired officer of the Indian Administrative Service (IAS), was sworn in today as Member of the Union Public Service Commission (UPSC). The Oath of Office and Secrecy was administered by Lt. Gen. Raj Shukla (Retd.), the seniormost Member of the Commission.

A 1989 batch officer of the IAS from the Bihar cadre, Ms. Chaturvedi brings with her over three decades of extensive experience in both state and central administration. Her career has been marked by key leadership roles including Secretary in the Department of Sports under the Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports, where she served from October 2021 until her retirement in June 2025. She played a pivotal role in several national sports initiatives such as the Khelo India Games, the FIDE Chess Olympiad, the FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup, the creation of the National Sports Repository System, and the enactment of the Anti-Doping Bill to fortify India’s anti-doping framework.

At the Centre, Ms. Chaturvedi also served as Additional Secretary in the Department of Personnel and Training (DoPT), Regional Deputy Director General at the UIDAI, and held several director-level positions in the Ministries of Urban Development, Information & Broadcasting, and Women & Child Development. In the Bihar state administration, she held prominent posts such as Principal Secretary in the Department of Finance, Commercial Tax Commissioner, Secretary in the Finance Department, and Vice Chairman of the Patna Regional Development Authority, among others.

Ms. Chaturvedi is an alumna of Nagpur University, holding a Bachelor’s degree in English and a Master’s degree in History—both with First Class. She also holds an M.Phil in Public Administration from Panjab University, Chandigarh, and a Diploma in the Russian language. Known for her linguistic fluency, she is conversant in Hindi, English, Urdu, Russian, and Marathi.

Born and raised in Maharashtra, Ms. Sujata Chaturvedi is widely respected for her administrative acumen, policy leadership, and dedication to public service. Her induction into the UPSC marks the continuation of a remarkable public service journey.
