Ruchira Kamboj appointed as High Commissioner to South Africa

Ms. Ruchira Kamboj IFS(1987), presently Ambassador/PR to Permanent Delegation of India to UNESCO, Paris has been appointed as the next High Commissioner of India to the Republic of South Africa.She is expected to take up her assignment shortly.

She was formerly the Chief of Protocol to the Government of India, and was the first woman in the Indian Foreign Service to hold this position. Ms Kamboj joined the Indian Foreign Service in 1987 being the topper of her batch for that year.[citation needed] She has served as the Deputy Head in the office of the Commonwealth Secretary-General, London. Prior to that, she served as the Minister & Head, High Commission of India, Cape Town, South Africa.

She has served as a Counsellor in the Permanent Mission of India to the United Nations in New York City. She has also served at the High Commission of India Mauritius and at the Indian Embassy in Paris. She has held the positions of Director/Deputy Secretary (Foreign Service Personnel) and Under-Secretary (Europe West) in the Ministry of External Affairs, New Delhi.On September 25, 2013, Ruchira Kamboj was appointed as the Ambassador & Permanent Representative of India to UNESCO, Paris.Ruchira Kamboj represented India at the meeting of UNESCO held on 17 July 2016 in which Chandigarh’s Capitol Complex and Sikkim’s national park home to the world’s third highest peak Mount Khangchendzonga were designated as World Heritage Sites.
