PM inaugurates first 800 MW Unit of NTPC’s Telangana Thermal Power Project


Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi inaugurated the initial 800 MW Unit of phase 1 within the Telangana Super Thermal Power Project, developed by NTPC, during a ceremony held in Nizamabad, Telangana today. Located in the Peddapalli district, this project is poised to offer cost-effective electricity to Telangana, thereby contributing significantly to the state’s economic progress. Moreover, it is set to become one of the nation’s most environmentally compliant power generation facilities.


Addressing the audience, the Prime Minister extended congratulations to the people of Telangana and underscored the pivotal role of self-sufficient electricity production in fostering both the Ease of Living and Ease of Doing Business. He emphasized that a consistent power supply is essential for propelling industrial growth within a state. The Prime Minister also noted that the project’s second unit would be operational soon, elevating the power plant’s total capacity to 4,000 MW. He expressed satisfaction with the Telangana Super Thermal Power Plant’s status as the most advanced facility among NTPC power plants nationwide, highlighting its significance in meeting the state’s electricity requirements. The Prime Minister praised the government’s commitment to completing projects initiated during his tenure, emphasizing that this exemplified the government’s work culture. He recalled laying the foundation stone for this project in 2016 and expressed gratitude for inaugurating it. The Prime Minister reaffirmed the government’s dedication to fulfilling Telangana’s energy needs.

Phase I of the Telangana Super Thermal Power Project by NTPC, established at an approved cost of ₹10,998 crore on the premises of NTPC’s existing Ramagundam station in Peddapalli district, is poised to provide 85% of its power output to the state of Telangana. This pit-head power station incorporates ultra supercritical technology, ensuring the availability of low-cost power for Telangana. Additionally, as NTPC’s most efficient power station in India, it will significantly reduce specific coal consumption and CO2 emissions, setting a benchmark for environmental compliance in the Indian power generation sector.

The commissioning of the first unit of the Telangana Super Thermal Power Project has significantly enhanced the power supply situation in Telangana and the entire nation. This milestone project is expected to contribute to the overall economic development of the region.
