India’s bio-economy has witnessed substantial growth, surging from $10 billion in 2014 to $80 billion at present, with projections aiming for $125 billion by 2025. Union Minister Dr. Jitendra Singh, speaking exclusively at the “Green Ribbon Champions” Conclave, underscored the pivotal role of a “Green Economy” in India’s future growth trajectory. He emphasized the importance of early industry participation in startups and research & development, highlighting the essential role of green financing and strong industrial engagement from the outset to surpass developmental thresholds effectively.

Dr. Singh also highlighted the Anusandhan National Research Foundation (NRF). The NRF, backed by substantial non-governmental resources, is designed to facilitate collaboration and synergy between the public and private sectors. It operates as a think tank, guiding project themes and international partnerships, with a strong emphasis on a scientific approach to innovation. The NRF Act, recently ratified by Parliament, allocates a budget of Rs. 50,000 crore over five years, predominantly sourced from non-governmental channels. This initiative aims to stimulate research, innovation, and clean energy research within India’s educational and research institutions while aligning with the objectives of Mission Innovation.

Dr. Jitendra Singh highlighted the transformative impact of the National Education Policy, NEP-2020, stressing its ability to empower students to transition between diverse fields of higher education, such as Engineering and Humanities, based on their aptitude.

He emphasized that the NEP-2020 would influence various aspects of life, including mental well-being, liberating youth from the confinement of aspirations primarily shaped by their parents.

The NEP-2020’s provisions, including multiple entry/exit options, aim to decouple degrees from education, fostering academic flexibility. This flexibility enables students to explore diverse career opportunities at different stages, aligning with their intrinsic learning and innate aptitude.
