In a significant appointment, Dr. Ajay Kumar, a distinguished retired IAS officer of the 1985 Kerala cadre, has been appointed as the Chairman of the Union Public Service Commission (UPSC) by the President of India under Article 316(1) of the Constitution. His tenure will commence from the date he assumes charge of the office.
Dr. Ajay Kumar brings with him a rich legacy of public service and administrative leadership. A former Secretary of the Department of Defence, Ministry of Defence, he is known for his strategic vision and impactful governance. His academic credentials are equally illustrious—he holds a Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering from the prestigious Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Kanpur, a Master of Science in Development Economics from the University of Minnesota, and a Ph.D. in Business Administration from the Carlson School of Management at the University of Minnesota. In recognition of his outstanding contributions to public administration and nation-building, IIT Kanpur honored him as a distinguished alumnus in 2019.
Over the course of his distinguished career, Dr. Kumar has held several key positions in both the Government of India and the Government of Kerala. His tenure included notable roles such as Principal Secretary (Information Technology), Secretary (Industries), and Managing Director of both the Kerala State Electronics Development Corporation and the Kerala State Co-operative Agricultural and Rural Development Bank. He also served as General Manager in the Kerala State Industrial Development Corporation and as District Magistrate and Collector of Palakkad district.
At the national level, Dr. Kumar has played a pivotal role in various ministries. His assignments included Defence Production Secretary, Additional Secretary in the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology, Joint Secretary in the Department of Information Technology, Director in the Department of Biotechnology, and Deputy Secretary in the Ministry of Home Affairs. He also served as Private Secretary in the Ministry of Non-Conventional Energy Sources, now known as the Ministry of New and Renewable Energy.
Spanning more than three decades, his service with the Kerala Government saw him leading three different departments, a testament to his administrative versatility and trusted leadership. His appointment as Chairman of UPSC is widely welcomed as a continuation of his long-standing dedication to public service, and he is expected to bring valuable insights and integrity to the nation’s premier recruiting agency.
