The Department of Telecommunications (DOT) is dedicated to formulating policies that accelerate the growth of India’s telecommunications sector while ensuring access to affordable and effective services for all citizens. Our mission is to foster innovation, uphold national security interests, and enhance communication capabilities, particularly in disaster management, to safeguard the well-being of our fellow countrymen.
In a significant collaboration, DOT has joined hands with the National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) to conduct extensive testing of the Cell Broadcast Alert System. This joint initiative is geared towards strengthening emergency communication during disasters, placing the safety and welfare of our esteemed citizens at the forefront.
Demonstrating an unwavering commitment to the safety of India’s people and communities, the Cell Broadcast Alert System will undergo rigorous testing across various Telecom Service Providers. These tests will occur periodically in diverse regions throughout the country, evaluating the efficiency and effectiveness of emergency alert broadcasting capabilities across different Mobile Operators and Cell Broadcast Systems.
The Cell Broadcast Alert System represents cutting-edge technology that empowers us to disseminate critical, time-sensitive disaster management messages to all mobile devices within specified geographical areas, irrespective of whether the recipients are residents or visitors. This ensures that vital emergency information reaches as many individuals as possible promptly. Government agencies and emergency services use Cell Broadcast to keep the public informed about potential threats and to provide crucial updates during critical situations. Common applications include delivering emergency alerts such as severe weather warnings (e.g., Tsunamis, Flash Floods, Earthquakes), public safety messages, evacuation notices, and other vital information.
As part of this endeavour, testing is underway in various states across India, with Punjab scheduled for testing on September 29th.
