Senior Police Officer and Director Vigilance of Odisha Police, Shri Debasis Panigrahi IPS (Odisha 1991) died at a private hospital in Kolkata while undergoing treatment after being infected with COVID-19 . Shri Panigarhi is survived by his wife, a son and a daughter. He was airlifted to the private hospital in Kolkata on June 8 and had tested positive for coronavirus despite taking two doses of vaccines in the first week of June and was initially under home isolation. But as his health declined, he was admitted to Cuttack Ashwini Covid Hospital where he was put in ventilator support.

Later, he was airlifted to Kolkata on 8th June as his health deteriorated further and was under ECMO support as he had developed serious pneumonia and was also suffering from various other comorbidities.

He was a creative writer and lyricist and have published 9 collections of short stories, written seven novels , published in three collections and published one novel in Odia language. Besides, a collection of his selected odia stories named “Things Left Unsaid” has been published by Lifi Publications, a Delhi based reputed national publishing house, receiving rave reviews from eminent writers like Ruskin Bond and Manoj Das. He had also penned a number of popular lyrics for audio and video albums, television and cinema. Some of his stories have been dramatized as well as translated in English, Hindi, Bengali, Telugu and Kannada.
He was a recipient of a host of literary awards, the most notable amongst them being ‘Odisha Sahitya Academy Award‘ for short stories for the 2002.
