The Prime Minister, Shri Narendra Modi, laid the foundation stone for the Dr. Ambedkar National Memorial, to be built at 26, Alipur Road in Delhi, the place of Mahaparinirvan of Dr. Ambedkar.

The plaque for the foundation stone was unveiled by the Prime Minister at Vigyan Bhawan. Later, delivering the sixth Dr. Ambedkar Memorial Lecture, the Prime Minister categorically asserted that no changes will be made to the Union Government’s reservation policy, so as to deprive the weaker sections of society, of their existing entitlements. He strongly condemned those who he said were spreading lies and misinformation in this regard. He recalled that such misinformation had been spread even when Shri Vajpayee was the Prime Minister.

Recalling the contributions of Dr. Ambedkar, the Prime Minister said that the Dr. Ambedkar National Memorial would soon become one of the iconic buildings of Delhi, and declared that he would himself inaugurate it on Babasaheb’s birthday – April 14th – in 2018.

The Prime Minister explained that five places were being developed as “Panchteerth” in honour of Dr. Ambedkar. These included his birthplace in Mhow, the place in London where he stayed while studying in the UK, Deeksha Bhoomi in Nagpur, Mahaparinirvan Sthal in Delhi, and Chaitya Bhoomi in Mumbai. In addition, the Prime Minister also referred to the building for the Dr. Ambedkar Foundation being built at Janpath in New Delhi.

Describing Dr. Ambedkar’s contributions for the nation, he said that while Sardar Patel had united the country politically, Dr. Ambedkar had united it socially through the Constitution. He recalled how Dr. Ambedkar had advocated equal rights for women, even in an era where this idea faced stiff political opposition. He said that it is an injustice to Dr. Ambedkar to limit his contributions to just the Dalits, or even just to India. He said Dr. Ambedkar raised his voice for all those who suffered injustice, and had a global stature, much like Martin Luther King in the US. Dr. Ambedkar was a Messiah for all labourers – not just Dalit labourers – the Prime Minister said, explaining how he had contributed to limiting working hours to eight.

Talking of recent policy initiatives and legislative measures, the Prime Minister said the vision for developing India’s maritime potential, and indeed for Inland Waterways, was first conceived by Dr. Ambedkar. Similarly, the vision for providing electricity to all unconnected villages, which the Union Government has promised by 2018, is also a step towards fulfilling Dr. Ambedkar’s vision, the Prime Minister said.

The Prime Minister recalled his recent meetings and interactions with Dalit Entrepreneurs, and the suggestions made by them. He said all these suggestions had been implemented by the Union Government in the recent Union Budget.

The Prime Minister said that the National Agriculture Market, an e-platform for farmers to get the best possible price for their produce, would be launched on 14th April this year.

Researchers advising to keep an eye on Children’s Calories

Summary:Most children overeat significantly when served large portions of calorie-dense popular foods, according to a new study. The results suggest that manipulating calorie content and portion size can substantially reduce children’s overall caloric consumption.

Most children overeat significantly when served large portions of calorie-dense popular foods, according to a Penn State study. The results suggest that manipulating calorie content and portion size can substantially reduce children’s overall caloric consumption.

Researchers in the Department of Nutritional Sciences found that caregivers can lower the calorie density (CD) of children’s meals by choosing palatable lower-CD, commercially available products, such as un-breaded, grilled chicken pieces and reduced-sugar applesauce.

“With acceptable and readily available products, strategies to reduce calories can be easily implemented in homes and childcare settings, and can be strategically combined with changes in portion size by serving larger portions of lower-CD foods with smaller portions of higher-CD foods,” said Barbara Rolls, co-author, professor and the Helen A. Guthrie Chair of Nutritional Sciences. “These strategies that moderate the effects of portion size are practical and effective in reducing calorie intake; however, policy makers and food producers need to provide the resources and products to help parents and caregivers counter pervasive influences.”

For the study, researchers varied the portion size and CD, or number of calories per bite, for lunches served to children in their normal eating environment.

When served a combination of larger portion and higher CD meals, the children’s intake increased by 175 calories, or 79 percent, in a single meal. Few children were able to resist these effects, and increasing portion size and CD of meals promoted excess calorie intake in the majority of children tested.

Researchers recently published their findings in Physiology & Behavior.

“We previously demonstrated that larger portions have a huge impact on children’s intake,” said Samantha Kling, co-author and doctoral candidate in nutritional sciences. “In this study, we found that serving larger portions of food, along with higher-calorie-density options of those foods, led to the children consuming larger amounts of food and more calories overall.”

Lunch was served in three childcare centers once a week for six weeks to 120 children aged 3 to 5 years.

Across the six meals, all items were served at three levels of portion size — 100 percent, 150 percent or 200 percent, and two levels of caloric density — 100 percent or 142 percent.

The lunch menu had either lower-calorie or higher-calorie versions of chicken, macaroni and cheese, vegetables, applesauce, ketchup, and milk. Children’s ratings of the foods indicated that the lower-calorie and higher-calorie meals were similarly well liked.

“There is a belief that young kids can self-regulate their food intake,” Rolls said. “This study shows those signals are really easy to override.”

Strategically moderating the portion size and caloric density of foods typically consumed by children could substantially reduce their caloric intake without affecting acceptability, Rolls said.

Other authors of the study include Kathleen Keller, assistant professor of nutritional sciences and food science; and Liane Roe, research nutritionist in nutritional sciences.

The National Institutes of Health through the National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases and the U.S. Department of Agriculture funded this study.

Celebrating Multicultural Ethos of Parsi-Zoroastrian Community

0
Arun Jaitley
Arun Jaitley

Shri Arun Jaitley, the Minister of Finance and Information & Broadcasting inaugurated the  months long cultural spectacle The Everlasting Flame International Programme . Speaking on the occasion Shri Arun Jaitley said Parsis mark a distinct thread in the tapestry  of multicultural heritage in India and are a  one rare community to be measured not by their number but their impact. Referring to Parsi’s ability to excel in any field , the Minister said Every Parsi is an institution in him/herself and  no two Parsis are same. Over generations Parsis not only stayed having adapted to the Indian context, preserved their culture, identity, endured their core belief, lived with dignity but also became role model for others.

Earlier welcoming the guests Dr. Najma Heptulla ,the Minister of Minority Affairs  said The Government of India is committed to the multi-cultural heritage of this ancient land and young country. Zoroastrianism and Rig Vedic Hinduism are sister cultures that share linguistic and cultural commonalities. The most important however is the Eternal flame- Agni or Atashthat burns in all our hearts. The battle of light and darkness in the mind and heart of every human; was first understood by Prophet Asho Zarathushtra in the Bronze Age.

It is great to see that the Parsi community, which has excelled in all walks of life, has consistently worked for the betterment of the society.

The achievements of the Parsi community are disproportionate to their size. They have done more for India than India has done for them and never sought any favours from the Government of the day. They have set new benchmarks by being selfless in the service of the nation and the society. The immense success and extraordinary leadership displayed by the Parsis is an inspiration to us all as we strive towards excellence. The fire they brought with them has fueled their great feats and efforts in nation building. This everlasting flame will continue to be eternal and our guiding light in the years to come.

She further said that the Parsis of India have also been great mediators. Dadabhai Naoroji, Gandhiji’s “Dada” or elder brother, could bridge both worlds. In 1867, his ‘drain of wealth’ theory showed how Britain was economically draining India. Yet, he was loved by the English people, who elected him as the first Indian to the British Parliament. Today, we have Lord Karan Bilimoria, who though in the British Parliament, is helping develop industry and commerce in Bihar and other parts of India. You, young Zoroastrians in the audience, have within you the makings of global citizens. However, do not forget your roots, and that India needs you, just as much as you need the affection of the people of this country.

Lord Karan Bilimoria, said that the two minsters present have spoken so high of  Parsis and day today un prompt comments from  other Indians   echo the same perception. He said that distinction  of the community lie in being confident but not aggressive and being ambitious but humble. It can be said that Parsis are Humbitioius (humble+ ambitious), he added. In context  to Parsi’s  excellence Lord Bilimoria said in per capita income  too Parsi community excels in the world but it would not have been possible without what this country has done for the community. Invoking a quote he said that If you want to go fast go alone, but if you want to go far go together and we (Parsi and India) will go far.

The function began with presenting bouquet of flowers to the dignitaries on dais and lighting  the ceremonial lamp. The event progressed with Dastur Khurshed, the Vada Dasturji(High Priest) of Udvada invoking Parsi prayer first in Avestan followed by  Sanskrit and English translations.A prayer song by Ghazal singer Penaz Masani  captivated  distinguished  audience. A  Special Covers commemorating  the   event was also issued  by Delhi  Circle, Department of Post.

Besides Shri Arun Jaitley and Dr. Najma Heptulla,Shri Mahesh Sharma, Minister of State (MoS) for Culture and Tourism(IC) and Civil Aviation; Shri Mukhtar Abbas Naqvi,MoS  Minority Affairs ; H.E. The exhibition takes the visitor on a journey from the earliest days of Zoroastrianism to its emergence as the foremost religion of imperial Iran. From the shores of Iran to the west coast of India, the maritime journey of Zoroastrians is followed to their settlement in India where they came to be known as the Parsis. The exhibition examines their growth as an immigrant community under British rule in India and the later expansions. The narrative is divided into 10 sections :The Ancient World, Sacred Texts, The Silk Road, Central Asia and China, The Judeo-Christian World, Imperial and Post-Imperial Iran, Post Arab Conquest,, Journey and Early Settlement in India, Parsi Salon and Fire Temple.

He was speaking at the inaugural session of the three-day Cognizance-2016, a technical annual fest at the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT), Roorkee.

The Defence Ministry in this regard has set the ball rolling for collaboration with IITs, NITs, IISc and other top institutions to work out a research and development paradigm that will include both “innovation and production” for the sector. He said the Defence Research Development Organisation (DSDO) and premier educational colleges like IITs should collaborate and provide better research avenues to students, which would help the country achieve its target as envisaged by ‘Make in India’.

Successful mentoring programs begin with Focus and Training

science indianbureaucracy

Summary:’Intentionally brief’ middle school mentoring programs yielded better grades, fewer absences, report investigators at the conclusion of their study.

Mentoring programs for school-aged children have grown in the past two decades, but their effectiveness has not kept pace with their popularity. A study from the University of Houston College of Education finds school-based mentoring programs fail because they lack sufficient time, mentor training and a research foundation.

“While community-based mentoring programs have been shown to be effective, the largest form of mentoring–school-based mentoring–has produced small, null and sometimes harmful results,” said Samuel D. McQuillin, assistant professor in the college’s department of psychological, health and learning sciences. “We believe that one way to address this is by developing models of mentoring that are brief, effective and reproducible.”

In his study “Brief Instrumental School-based Mentoring for Middle School Students: Theory and Impact,” McQuillin presented findings from a series of revisions and evaluations of an “intentionally brief” school-based mentoring program. Their program is informed by social science theories (social cognitive theory, cognitive dissonance theory, motivational interviewing) and research in academic enablers.

“Middle school youth typically have decreased academic motivation and life satisfaction along with higher truancy than elementary students. Mentoring can play a significant role in combatting these,” McQuillin said. “But nationally, very few programs provide meaningful training, which may prompt mentors to stop the program, leaving their mentees with a sense of loss or even rejection.”

In his study, 72 middle school students in an urban Houston charter school were divided, with about half receiving eight mentoring sessions over 12 weeks and the other group continuing with their regular school routine. Mentors applied for their positions and completed a mentor training program and performance test requirements. Training involved an online training module, in-person training on campus and the mentoring site. The mentoring sessions all were supervised by individuals who also received training. After the three month program, students in the mentoring group saw increases in their math and English grades, compared with the students who did not receive the mentoring. Additionally, McQuillin says they reported more satisfaction with their life and fewer absences in school. Their results were based on school academic records, behavior records and students self-surveys on life satisfaction.

“This study provides promising evidence that brief, instrumental mentoring programs can improve school-relevant outcomes for middle school students,” he said.

The study was published in the journal Advances in School Mental Health Promotion.

BHEL continues despite Land Acquisition and Law & Order problems

Mr. Amitabh Mathur ,Director – Industrial Systems & Products, BHEL, mentioned that the leading power equipment manufacturers and designers has been suffering a great deal to execute some of its projects on account of two factors namely the Land Acquisition and the law & order problem especially in north, central and eastern region.

“A case for example is the super critical projects in Karanpur and Navi Nagar in which the work is progressing with piecemeal speed as the company has so far succeeded in acquiring land for it in a patched manner and finding it difficult to remove hutments in such locations on which even residential colonies have come up”, said Mr. Mathur.

Addressing a National Conference on “Electrical Power Equipment Diagnostic-Integrating IT in Power T&D Efficiency” under aegis of PHD Chamber of Commerce and Industry here today, Mr. Mathur pointed out that BHEL is engaged in the design, engineering, manufacturing, construction, testing, commissioning and servicing of a wide range of products, systems and services for the core sectors of the economy, namely power, transmission, industry, transportation, renewable energy, oil & gas and defence has been confronting with the aforesaid situation for quite some time on account of which its deliveries have been adversely effected.

Despite the government support and the help of the Union Power Ministry and other such organs, the company somehow was managing on these two fronts as it has been acquiring land in pieces and somehow making sure that the projects go on, pointed out Mr. Mathur adding that removing the hutments on project sites is a gigantic task.

Speaking on the occasion, Additional General Manager, NLDC, Power System Operation Corporation, Mr. P K Agarwal said that his corporation has begun to monitor grids operation with greater accuracy with the help of available IT tools with increased efficiency.

Providing the industry perspective on the occasion, Chairman, Energy Committee, PHD Chamber, Dr. Harish Ahuja felt that the government of the day has come out with several meaningful schemes to set right the financial mess arisen in various discoms with the UDAY schemes which in the opinion of the PHD Chamber would be a successful scheme as so far 15 states have agreed to go by the provisions of UDAY to make their electricity boards efficient and profitable in due course of time.

The conference was moderated by the Director, PHD Chamber,  Dr. Ranjeet Mehta.
