NITI Aayog in partnership with the Government of Andhra Pradesh, successfully organised a two-day National Workshop on Harnessing Potential of Fisheries in Inland States in Visakhapatnam, Andhra Pradesh. It is a collaborative effort aimed at maximising the potential of fisheries in India’s inland states. The workshop drew participation from key stakeholders including central and state government officials, researchers, industry representatives, practitioners and Fish Farmer Producer Organisation (FFPO).

The workshop in its various technical sessions focused on critical aspects such as sustainability practices, export competitiveness, infrastructure gaps, and livelihood challenges facing India’s inland fisheries industry. Hon’ble Minister Shri Parshotam Rupala emphasised the need for active handholding and skill development of traditional fishermen to enhance their competitiveness. He also addressed the concept of connecting each Amrit Sarovar to create opportunities for generating livelihoods through inland fisheries. He suggested that the fish market should adopt a marketing approach similar to that of a fish mall, fostering a culture akin to shopping malls in metropolitan cities. He highlighted the government’s emphasis on fisheries, including initiatives like Pradhan Mantri Matsya Sampada Yojana (PMMSY), Blue Revolution, FIDH, and other insurance related schemes.

Prof. Ramesh Chand, Member of NITI Aayog, highlighted the achievements of Andhra Pradesh in the fisheries sector and stressed the importance of addressing regional disparities in production and productivity.

The second day of the workshop featured technical sessions on Sustainability in Inland Fisheries: FFPOs/Cooperatives Led Development Models and Issues and Challenges in Inland Fisheries Industry in India. These sessions facilitated discussions among policymakers, industry players, and fisheries startups, identifying actionable recommendations and future roadmaps for the sector’s growth.

A total of 13 states showcased their accomplishments, potential, challenges, and best practices during the workshop. The workshop concluded with a convergence on actionable recommendations and a future roadmap, emphasising the importance of inter-state and centre-state cooperation in realising the immense growth potential of India’s inland fisheries sector. The relationships forged and next steps identified during the event would lay a strong foundation for the sector’s significant growth opportunities in the future.

Satellite INSAT-3DS on launch vehicle GSLV-F14, fully funded by the Ministry of Earth Sciences (MoES), was successfully launched by the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) from the Satish Dhawan Space Centre in Sriharikota, Andhra Pradesh, today at 1730 hrs.

INSAT-3DS will augment the country’s meteorological (weather, climate, and ocean related) services with the presently operational INSAT-3D and INSAT-3DR in-orbit satellites. The newly launched INSAT-3DS satellite aims to enhance the monitoring of Earth’s surface, atmosphere, oceans, and environment, elevate capabilities in data collection and dissemination and satellite-aided search and rescue services. The initiative will boost India’s weather, climate, and ocean-related observations and services, expanding knowledge and better disaster mitigation and preparedness in the future.

image0023GMLThe 51.7-meter (m) tall and 4 m wide Geosynchronous Satellite Launch Vehicle (GSLV)-F14 placed the INSAT-3DS satellite into a geosynchronous transfer orbit, then to a geosynchronous stationary orbit in space. INSAT-3DS is configured around ISRO’s well-proven I-2k bus platform with a lift-off mass of 2,275 kilograms. It is equipped with state-of-the-art payloads: (i) an imager payload with a six-channel optical radiometer to generate images of the Earth and its environment; (ii) a 19-channel sounder payload to provide information on the atmosphere; communication payloads, namely (iii) a data relay transponder to receive meteorological, hydrological and oceanographic data from automatic data collection platforms, and (iv) a satellite aided search and rescue transponder that relays a distress signal or alert from beacon transmitters with global coverage. Indian Industries have significantly contributed to the making of the INSAT-3DS.

image003NOJKMeteorological data from the INSAT-3DS satellite shall be utilised by institutes of the Ministry of Earth Sciences (MoES), namely, India Meteorology Department (IMD), National Centre for Medium-Range Weather Forecasting (NCMRWF), Indian Institute of Tropical Meteorology (IITM), National Institute of Ocean Technology (NIOT), and Indian National Centre for Ocean Information Services (INCOIS) and various Indian agencies to enhance meteorological research and services. This will boost India’s weather and climate prediction and forecasts, timely alerts and early warnings, and advisories for public and last mile users such as fisherfolk and farmers.

Government approves ex-gratia compensation for more than one lakh FCI employees in case of death due to COVID-19

In a crucial move for agricultural welfare, the Government of India has hiked the authorised capital of the Food Corporation of India (FCI) from Rs 10,000 Crore to Rs 21,000 Crore. This strategic decision is expected to supporting farmers and strengthening India’s agrarian economy.

FCI, the cornerstone of India’s food security framework, plays a pivotal role in various functions, including MSP-based grain procurement, maintaining strategic food stocks, and stabilizing grain prices. The capital increase aims to enhance FCI’s operational capabilities, reduce interest burdens, and positively impact Government subsidies.

This infusion of capital will facilitate FCI’s modernization of storage, transportation, and adoption of advanced technologies to minimize post-harvest losses and improve grain distribution. The move aligns with the government’s dual commitment to MSP-based procurement and investment in FCI’s operational efficiency, empowering farmers and ensuring food security.

As FCI integrates IT solutions, adopts automation, and invests in infrastructure, the nation anticipates a more resilient and prosperous future for its agricultural sector, with farmers at its core. The government’s periodic specifications for maintaining strategic grain stocks underscore FCI’s role in addressing food-related challenges and ensuring the nation’s resilience.
