The 11th Asia Fire Protection Inspection Council (AFIC) Meet, hosted by the Centre for Fire, Explosive and Environment Safety (CFEES), DRDO, in collaboration with the Confederation of Indian Industry (CII), commenced in New Delhi on November 21, 2024. This three-day event (November 21–23) brings together representatives from six Asian countries, including 21 international delegates, to facilitate technical exchange and collaboration in fire safety technologies and standards development across Asia.

Key Highlights:

  1. Opening Remarks by DRDO Chairman:
    Dr. Samir V. Kamat, Secretary of the Department of Defence R&D and Chairman of DRDO, emphasized the significance of the AFIC meet as a platform for knowledge exchange and innovation. He highlighted DRDO’s commitment to advancing self-reliant fire safety technologies and fostering global competitiveness to strengthen both national security and India’s industrial capabilities.
  2. Concurrent Events:
    • International Seminar on “Latest Trends in Fire Safety and Future Perspectives”: This seminar explores cutting-edge developments in fire safety, bringing together over 100 experts from various organizations, including state fire services, armed forces, DRDO, BSF, and CAPFs.
    • Asian Fire Safety Expo (AFSE) 2024: Hosted as part of the India Industry Expo 2024, the expo features advanced fire safety technologies and products. Republic of Korea, participating as the Country Partner, highlights the global collaboration in fire safety innovations.
  3. CFEES Role:
    CFEES has orchestrated these events under a unified agenda to:

    • Foster innovation and self-reliance in fire safety technologies.
    • Promote technology transfer and domestic manufacturing within the fire safety industry.
    • Enhance collaboration between researchers, professionals, decision-makers, and industries.
    • Contribute to national security by advancing fire safety capabilities.
  4. Focus on Collaboration and Development:
    The event reflects India’s growing focus on integrating advanced fire safety standards with national and regional security objectives. It also serves as a hub for showcasing innovative fire safety solutions and strengthening ties between Asian nations.

The 11th AFIC Meet and its associated events underscore India’s leadership in fire protection technologies and its efforts to build a self-reliant, globally competitive ecosystem for fire safety.

BRO undertakes renovation of twin-tube Jawahar tunnel in J&K

The Border Roads Organisation (BRO) has completed extensive renovations of the Jawahar Tunnel, a historic 2.5 km-long twin-tube structure built in 1956, located in Jammu & Kashmir. The upgraded tunnel is set to open for public use in December 2024, bringing it on par with modern tunnels by incorporating state-of-the-art technology to improve security, safety, and user comfort.

Key Features of the Renovation:

  1. Project Details:
    • Undertaken via Engineering, Procurement, and Construction (EPC) mode.
    • Funded by the Ministry of Road Transport & Highways at a cost of ₹62.5 crore.
    • Managed by Project Beacon of the BRO, the work was completed in nearly one year.
  2. Upgraded Infrastructure:
    • Civil and Electro-Mechanical Works: Includes structural rehabilitation and technological upgrades.
    • Advanced Monitoring Systems:
      • 76 high-definition CCTV cameras for continuous surveillance.
      • Smoke and fire sensors to enhance safety.
      • SCADA systems (Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition) for centralized control and automation.
      • A centralized monitoring room for real-time supervision.
  3. Significance of the Jawahar Tunnel:
    • It serves as a vital link through the Pir Panjal range, connecting the Kashmir Valley and Leh with the rest of India.
    • Acts as an alternative route to NH-44, playing a crucial role in maintaining connectivity during emergencies.
    • Used by vehicles carrying oil tankers, explosives, and gasoline, which are prohibited in the Quazikund-Banihal Tunnel.
  4. Strategic and Economic Importance:
    • The renovation enhances the reliability and functionality of the tunnel, critical for trade and transportation in the region.
    • The improved infrastructure is expected to boost regional connectivity and safety, contributing to the socio-economic development of Jammu & Kashmir.

This upgrade by BRO underscores its commitment to enhancing infrastructure in challenging terrains, ensuring safer and more efficient travel while supporting India’s strategic connectivity goals.
