REC Limited Joins Hands with Gandhigram Rural Institute to Promote Renewable Energy

Indian Bureaucracy, Dindigul, January 11, 2025| In an effort to promote sustainable energy and contribute to the country’s renewable energy goals, REC Limited, a Maharatna CPSE and a leading NBFC under the Ministry of Power, has signed a Memorandum of Agreement (MoA) with the Gandhigram Rural Institute in Dindigul, Tamil Nadu.

Under its Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) initiative, REC has committed a substantial financial assistance of ₹8.44Cr. to establish a 1MW multitechnology ground-mounted, grid-connected solar photovoltaic power plant at the Gandhigram Rural Institute (GRI) in Dindigul, Tamil Nadu. The innovative project aims to harness the power of sunlight to generate clean and reliable energy for the students, research scholars, and staff of the institute. The establishment of this solar photovoltaic multi technology power plant will not only make the Institute self-reliant in terms of power but will also act as hub for research on use of latest state of the art technology in the terms of panels and inverters technologies in modern solar power plants.

The agreement was signed between Smt Thara Ramesh, Chief Program Manager at the Regional Office of REC Limited, Chennai, and Dr L Rathakrishnan, GRI, in presence of Shri Narayanan Thirupathy, Independent Director, REC. The project will be implemented by the GRI in technical collaboration with BHEL, a leading engineering and manufacturing company in India.

As India continues to navigate the challenges of climate change, this initiative by REC Limited and Gandhigram Rural Institute serves as a powerful example of what can be achieved through public-private partnerships and collaborative efforts. The project’s successful implementation is expected to inspire others to follow suit, paving the way for a sustainable and renewable energy future to come.

This initiative by REC Limited marks a significant milestone in its CSR efforts, highlighting the company’s commitment to promoting renewable energy, reducing carbon emissions, and contributing to the country’s sustainable development goals.

The installation of the solar power plant at the GRI campus is expected to not only reduce the institute’s reliance on non-renewable energy sources but also provide a valuable learning experience for its students and research scholars. This project is a testament to the institute’s commitment to sustainable development and its role as a leader in promoting renewable energy in rural areas.
