RailTel Corporation of India Ltd. has added yet another jewel in its crown by wining the ‘Best Social Wi-Fi Project Award’ by Digianalysys at My India Wi-Fi Summit 2018. The award was presented in a grand ceremony on 6th September 2018 at New Delhi. RailTel won the award in recognition of it’s Rural station Wi-Fi initiative supported by Universal Service Obligatory Fund (USOF) of Department of Telecom, Govt of India.
RailTel was entrusted with the work of providing high speed Wi-Fi service at 200 B, D, E & F category stations across India with the utilization of Universal Service Obligatory Fund (USOF) of Department of Telecom. The idea behind providing Wi-Fi in these stations were to transform the Railway stations into a platform for Digital inclusion for the populations of the nearby areas of those stations. RailTel completed the work of providing Wi-Fi service at 200 B, D, E & F category stations in a span of mere 4 months. The Wi-Fi service is branded under RailWire, RailTel’s retail broadband service.
These stations see very less footfall yet we have 5 lakh+ and growing monthly logins which speaks volume of the success of the project. We plan to leverage the Wi-Fi systems installed at station to create a larger eco system of digital literacy by opening small kiosks- RailWire Saathi stall- at stations to help people use internet and access various online services.
RailTel is a major player in Public Wi-Fi space and RailTel have successfully provided Wi- Fi in 700+ railway stations across India and with more than 8 million users login monthly this network is one of the largest Public Wi-Fi network of the world. Out of these 200 rural (B,D,E,F category) stations were done with the USOF of DoT, 413 large( A,A1 and C category) station Wi-Fi were executed in partnership with Google and 98 more stations were executed by RailTel on it’s own. We have plan of further providing Wi-Fi at more railway stations across India.
