Prof. Umesh Vasudeo Waghmare presently Professor and Dean (Faculty Affairs)- Jawaharlal Nehru Centre for Advanced Scientific Research (JNCASR) has been appointed as President- JNCASR, Bangalore by the Appointments Committee of the Cabinet.

Prof. Umesh V. Waghmare is a distinguished physicist known for his contributions to theoretical condensed matter physics and materials science. He graduated with an Institute Silver Medal and a B.Tech. in Engineering Physics (1990) from the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Bombay. He earned his Ph.D. in Applied Physics from Yale University, New Haven, in 1996, followed by postdoctoral research at Harvard University from 1996 to 2000.

In 2000, Prof. Waghmare joined the Jawaharlal Nehru Centre for Advanced Scientific Research (JNCASR) as an Assistant Professor and has since played a key role in advancing research in theoretical and computational materials science. His interdisciplinary work spans the areas of nanotechnology, quantum materials, and functional materials.

He has also held notable academic affiliations, including:

  • Adjunct Professor, Birck Nanotechnology Center, Purdue University (2010–2012)

  • Adjunct Professor, Tata Institute of Fundamental Research (TIFR), Mumbai (2014–2017)

Prof. Waghmare is recognized nationally and internationally for his pioneering research and remains actively engaged in mentoring, collaborative research, and academic leadership within the scientific community.
