Shri S Balaji Arun Kumar IRTS (1997) has been appointed as Joint Secretary at the Centre.
Mr. S. Balaji Arunkumar is a highly accomplished and visionary civil servant whose career reflects a strong commitment to modernizing India’s transportation and logistics infrastructure. With over two decades of distinguished service, he has held several pivotal roles across the Indian Railways and port management sectors, earning wide respect for his administrative insight, strategic thinking, and hands-on leadership.
An alumnus of Madras University with a degree in Law, Mr. Arunkumar has effectively combined legal understanding with operational expertise to deliver impactful governance in complex systems. During his tenure with the Indian Railways and the Container Corporation of India (CONCOR), Chennai, he was instrumental in establishing a pioneering Less-than-Container Load (LCL) hub at the Inland Container Depot — a move that significantly enhanced freight handling efficiency and regional logistics.
His career further flourished with his appointment as Deputy Chairman of the Kolkata Dock System, under the Kolkata Port Trust, where he played a critical role in improving port operations and infrastructure. As Chairman and Managing Director of Hooghly Dock & Port Engineers Limited (HDPEL), he led modernization efforts and steered the organization through a phase of strategic realignment and growth.
Recognizing his contributions and leadership potential, Mr. Arunkumar has been empanelled for Joint Secretary or equivalent positions in the Government of India — a prestigious endorsement of his capability to take on higher responsibilities at the national level.
