Shri Mohit Gupta IPS (UP 2006), presently Inspector General of Police, Varanasi Range, is transferred and appointed as Secretary – Home, Uttar Pradesh.

Shri Mohit Gupta, is a distinguished officer of the 2006 batch of the Indian Police Service (IPS), Uttar Pradesh cadre, has been promoted to the position of Home Secretary of the state. In this capacity, he will oversee Uttar Pradesh’s extensive administrative network, comprising 75 districts across an approximate area of 243,286 square kilometers and serving a population exceeding 200 million (as per the 2011 census). Notably, the Uttar Pradesh Police constitutes the largest single police force nationally and globally, commanded by the Director General of Police and encompassing approximately 310,000 personnel. This force is distributed across the state’s 75 districts, along with 33 armed battalions and specialized units dedicated to intelligence, investigation, anti-corruption measures, technical services, training, and forensic science.

Shri Gupta originally from Delhi, holds a degree in BE Computer Science. His early assignments in UP included serving as Superintendent of Police (SP) in several Uttar Pradesh districts, such as Fatehgarh, Etawah, Siddharthnagar, Chitrakoot, Bahraich, Gonda, Aligarh, Raebareli, Ayodhya, and Mathura. These postings, often in politically sensitive or communally significant areas, proved to be a strategic asset for the state, as they necessitated the development of adeptness in law and order, crime control, and public safety, alongside a nuanced understanding of socio-cultural factors, all of which are crucial for effective governance in a state as large and administratively complex as Uttar Pradesh.

Shri Mohit Gupta has built a notable career over nearly two decades, and has served in a range of high-profile roles across Uttar Pradesh as well as at the center, where he served for six years in the CBI on deputation. In September 2024, Gupta was appointed Inspector General (IG) of the Varanasi Range, overseeing the districts of Chandauli, Ghazipur, and Jaunpur, a role that placed him in charge of one of Uttar Pradesh’s most culturally and politically significant regions.
