In a solemn ceremony held at 10:00 AM on May 14, 2025, at the Ganatantra Mandap, Rashtrapati Bhavan, Justice Bhushan Ramkrishna Gavai was sworn in as the Chief Justice of the Supreme Court of India. The oath of office was administered by the Hon’ble President of India, marking a significant moment in the nation’s judicial history.

Born on November 24, 1960, in Amravati, Maharashtra, Justice Gavai brings to the position nearly four decades of distinguished legal and judicial experience. He began his legal career in March 1985, initially working under the late Barrister Raja S. Bhonsale, a former Advocate General and High Court Judge. From 1987 onwards, he practiced independently at the Bombay High Court, focusing on Constitutional and Administrative Law.

Justice Gavai’s career in public service began in 1992 when he was appointed Assistant Government Pleader and Additional Public Prosecutor at the Nagpur Bench of the Bombay High Court. He was elevated to Government Pleader and Public Prosecutor in 2000. In 2003, he was appointed as an Additional Judge of the Bombay High Court and became a permanent Judge in 2005. Over the years, he has adjudicated numerous landmark cases across the Mumbai Principal Seat and benches in Nagpur, Aurangabad, and Panaji.

Elevated to the Supreme Court of India on May 24, 2019, Justice Gavai has authored approximately 300 judgements, including Constitution Bench decisions that have reinforced the rule of law and protected the fundamental, human, and legal rights of citizens. His legal reasoning, clarity, and commitment to justice have been widely acknowledged.

Justice Gavai has also represented India on the global stage, attending international judicial conferences in Mongolia, the United States, the United Kingdom, and Kenya. His academic engagements include lectures at prestigious institutions such as Columbia University and Harvard University, where he has spoken on constitutional and environmental law.

Justice Gavai is set to serve as the Chief Justice of India until his retirement on November 23, 2025. His appointment is widely seen as a continuation of his steadfast dedication to upholding judicial integrity and constitutional values in India’s democracy.
