India has achieved a significant milestone in its renewable energy journey, surpassing 200 GW of installed renewable energy capacity. This accomplishment aligns with the country’s ambitious target of generating 500 GW from non-fossil fuel sources by 2030, reflecting its steadfast commitment to sustainable energy and climate action.

Milestone in Renewable Energy Capacity

As of October 2024, India’s total renewable energy-based electricity generation capacity stands at 203.18 GW, a remarkable 13.5% increase from the 178.98 GW recorded in October 2023. Including nuclear energy, the country’s total non-fossil fuel capacity has risen to 211.36 GW, further cementing its transition toward cleaner energy sources. Renewable energy now accounts for more than 46.3% of India’s total electricity generation capacity, which has reached 452.69 GW.

Contributions from Key Renewable Energy Sources

India’s renewable energy mix showcases its resource diversity:

  • Solar Power: 92.12 GW, leveraging abundant sunlight for large-scale generation.
  • Wind Power: 47.72 GW, capitalizing on coastal and inland wind corridors.
  • Hydropower: 52 GW, including 46.93 GW from large hydro projects and 5.07 GW from small hydro.
  • Biopower: 11.32 GW, utilizing biomass and biogas for sustainable energy production.

These efforts are critical for reducing dependency on fossil fuels, enhancing energy security, and building a resilient energy future.

Job Creation in the Renewable Energy Sector

India’s renewable energy boom has been a significant driver of job creation, with an estimated 1.02 million jobs in 2023, according to the International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA). Key contributors include:

  • Hydropower: 453,000 jobs, making India the second-largest global employer in this segment.
  • Solar Photovoltaics (PV): 318,600 jobs, with 238,000 in grid-connected projects and 80,000 in off-grid systems.
  • Wind Energy: 52,200 jobs, across operations, maintenance, and installation.
  • Bioenergy: 178,000 jobs spanning liquid biofuels, solid biomass, and biogas.

This robust workforce underscores the sector’s role in economic growth and green job generation.

Progress Toward Global Climate Commitments

India’s progress aligns with its enhanced Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs) under the Paris Agreement. Key commitments include:

  • 45% reduction in emissions intensity by 2030 (compared to 2005 levels).
  • 50% non-fossil fuel-based power capacity by 2030.
  • Adoption of sustainable lifestyles through the LIFE movement.
  • Aiming for net-zero emissions by 2070.

Leading States in Renewable Energy

Several states are at the forefront of India’s renewable energy transition:

  • Rajasthan: 29.98 GW, benefiting from extensive solar potential.
  • Gujarat: 29.52 GW, driven by solar and wind projects.
  • Tamil Nadu: 23.70 GW, leveraging favorable wind patterns.
  • Karnataka: 22.37 GW, excelling in solar and wind energy initiatives.

A Path to a Sustainable Future

India’s renewable energy trajectory is bolstered by innovative policies like the National Green Hydrogen Mission, PM-KUSUM, PM Surya Ghar, and PLI schemes for solar PV modules. These initiatives underscore the government’s strategic approach to expanding renewable capacity, reducing reliance on fossil fuels, and addressing climate challenges.

With a target of 500 GW of non-fossil capacity by 2030, India is well-positioned to lead globally in renewable energy. This achievement not only ensures energy security but also advances environmental sustainability, showcasing India’s holistic approach to building a greener and more resilient economy.
