The 2024 World Intellectual Property Indicators (WIPI) report by WIPO highlights India’s exceptional growth in patents, trademarks, and industrial designs, cementing its position as a top global player in intellectual property (IP). India ranked 6th in patent applications with 64,480 filings in 2023, achieving a +15.7% growth and marking its fifth consecutive year of double-digit increases. Notably, 55.2% of these filings were from Indian residents, reflecting the country’s growing domestic innovation ecosystem, supported by initiatives like the National IPR Policy and Atmanirbhar Bharat. Patent grants also surged by 149.4%, underscoring the efficiency of India’s patent system and the rising quality of applications.

Industrial design applications grew by 36.4%, driven by sectors such as textiles, tools, and healthcare, signifying India’s shift toward value-added, design-driven industries. In trademarks, India ranked 4th globally, with resident filings dominating at 90%. The nation now holds over 3.2 million active trademarks, showcasing a robust focus on brand protection in sectors like health, agriculture, and clothing.

Government initiatives, including Start-Up India, the Atal Innovation Mission, and the modernization of IP offices, have fostered a thriving innovation ecosystem. With its dynamic economy, rising IP activity, and focus on research and development, India is poised to continue its ascent as a global innovation powerhouse, driving economic growth and strengthening its position in the global IP landscape.
