Indian mango exports expand, crossing USD 47.98 Million in 2023-24

The Agricultural and Processed Food Products Export Development Authority (APEDA), under the Ministry of Commerce and Industry, has been diligently working towards boosting India’s mango exports. The efforts have yielded promising results in the first five months of the fiscal year 2023-24, with mango exports reaching USD 47.98 million. This marks a 19 percent increase compared to the previous year when the exports amounted to USD 40.33 million during the same period.

Collaboration with Ministry of Agriculture and Farmers Welfare

In cooperation with the Ministry of Agriculture and Farmers Welfare, APEDA facilitated the export of 22,963.78 metric tons (MT) of mangoes worth USD 48.53 million in 2022-23. In the current fiscal year 2023-24, from April to August, India has exported 27,330.02 MT of mangoes valued at USD 47.98 million. As part of their efforts to promote mango exports for the 2023 season, the Ministry of Agriculture and Farmers Welfare and APEDA took steps to invite the United States Department of Agriculture’s (USDA) Animal & Plant Health Inspection Service (APHIS) inspector for the preclearance of mangoes. This initiative encompassed irradiation facilities in Vashi, Nashik, Bangalore, and Ahmedabad.

Impressive Growth in Exports to the USA

India’s exports of Indian mangoes to the USA recorded remarkable success, witnessing a 19 percent growth compared to the previous fiscal year. In the first five months of the current fiscal, India exported 2043.60 MT of Indian mangoes to the USA.

Exploring New Destinations

Apart from the USA, India has been actively exploring new destinations for mango exports. The country exported 43.08 MT of mangoes to Japan, 110.99 MT to New Zealand, 58.42 MT to Australia, and 4.44 MT to South Africa, marking it as a new destination for Indian mangoes.

Collaboration with South Korea

India, in collaboration with the Ministry of Agriculture and Farmers Welfare and APEDA, invited inspectors from South Korea for mango preclearance. This initiative allowed India to export 18.43 MT of mangoes to South Korea after treating them at the authorized Vapour Heat Treatment facility under the joint supervision of the Directorate of Plant Protection, Quarantine, and Storage (DPPQS) in India and the Animal and Plant Quarantine Agency (APQA) in South Korea.

Widening Export Horizons in 2023

The year 2022-23 saw a substantial increase in mango exports, with India venturing into 41 countries, including new destinations like Iran, Mauritius, the Czech Republic, and Nigeria.

Promotion Initiatives

APEDA actively participated in the Seoul Food & Hotel Show to promote Indian mango exports. To commemorate India’s 75th year of Independence (Azadi ka Amrit Mahotsav), APEDA facilitated the export of 75 varieties of eastern mangoes to Bahrain, including 5 Geographical Indication (GI)-tagged varieties.

In addition to these efforts, APEDA organized mango promotion programs and festivals in collaboration with the respective Indian missions in various countries. Events such as mango tasting in Brussels, showcases of different mango varieties, and the presentation of mango-based dishes have been part of these initiatives.

Export Promotion in International Markets

APEDA’s endeavours in 2023 included organizing a mango promotion program in Malaysia in collaboration with the High Commission of India in Kuala Lumpur, where the Kesar and Banaganapalli varieties were showcased.

Furthermore, APEDA facilitated a consignment of mangoes to the Embassy of India in Kabul for a mango promotion program in Afghanistan. A similar show was organized in Kuwait by APEDA in partnership with the Embassies of India, Kuwait. These initiatives are aimed at further expanding India’s mango exports and making a mark in international markets.
