In an Indian Bureaucracy PSU news update, NLC India Limited has successfully rejuvenated a Bucket Wheel Excavator 1572, which has been in service for the past 27 years. Dr. Sarat Kumar Acharya, CMD, NLCIL commissioned the machinery at the Specialised Mining Equipment (SME) Erection Yard of Mine-I, Neyveli on 31.03.2017.
The 700L Bucket Wheel Excavator 1572, (BWE) supplied by erstwhile M/S Krupp Germany (presently Thyssen Krupp Industrial Solutions, (TKIS) Germany) was commissioned on 21.12.1990. The BWE had completed 27 years of life with 1, 31,027 total working hours in the excavation of overburden/Lignite. To extend the life of the BWE further, the Rejuvenation programme was taken up with the assistance of Original Equipment Manufacturer (OEM) M/s. TKIS, Germany at a cost of Rs.49.24 Crores.
During Major Overhaul, major repair, replacements, reconditioning and modifications were carried out. the mechanical and electrical parts were strengthened and worn out parts were replaced as required. Variable Voltage Variable Frequency drives system introduced and E houses and Operator cabins were Air-conditioned. The dismantling, re-conditioning and re-erection of the BWE has been completed within the period of 9 months 23 days (08.06.2016 to 31.03.2017) against the scheduled period of 13 months.
In a simple function held at the SME Erection Yard of Mine-I Dr. Sarat Kumar Acharya , CMD NLC, commissioned the machinery and in his informal speech stressed on the importance of Cost Analysis in implementing this type of Rejuvenation an Life Extension projects. He said Cost Analysis is crucial and important to determine whether to go ahead with a project or not and it helps in making exact financial decision.
