India’s fourth largest IT bellwether HCL Technologies bagged a $400-million (Rs.2,400 crore) deal to run the IT operations of DNB Bank ASA, Norway’s largest bank.

“As part of the multi-year deal, we will migrate and transform DNB’s systems and infrastructure from its IT partner to two data centres in Norway,” HCL vice president Ashish Gupta said in a statement here Wednesday.

As the world’s leading maritime shipping banks, DNB provides a wide range of financial services to 2.5 million customers and end users in the Nordic region and key international locations.

“The partnership will help the Norwegian bank to improve operational stability, reduce cost and implement a robust application operations framework with service quality and innovation,” Gupta asserted.

As the prime services provider, HCL will manage operations and multiple vendors across the bank’s complex technology landscape.

“HCL has demonstrated expertise in transformations for large clients in the financial services segment and with its operations, we aim to deliver a first-class user experience to our users,” DNB chief operating officer Liv Fiksdahl said on the occasion.

As global banks are looking for ways to improve their mission-critical IT operations for delivering world-class customer service, Gupta said its team would deploy its Enterprise of the future framework to enable DNB to transform its IT infrastructure.

“Our engagement with DNB is a testimony of our strength as provider of choice for the Generation 2.0 outsourcing market with complex and transformational engagements delivered for customers in many industries,” Gupta added.

The Election Commission (EC) has ordered the deployment of more security personnel for the fifth phase of polling in 15 parliamentary constituencies of Uttar Pradesh on May 7, officials said on Tuesday.

With several incidents of booth capturing in the third and fourth rounds of balloting in the state and apprehensions about further rigging by major political parties, the EC has directed that 300 companies of central forces will oversee the May 7 election in the state.

Chief Electoral Officer Umesh Sinha has asked for enhanced security cover at all the polling stations at a meeting held with the security agencies, a senior official told IANS.

More security personnel are now available for the remaining two phases of election in the state as in most parts of the country, the polls are over. The EC can now use them optimally, DIG A. Satish Ganesh told IANS.

With some seats being located in the naxal affected regions of the eastern Uttar Pradesh in the May 7 polls, more security cover is provided to the polling officials on duty, Ganesh said.

Many opposition leaders, including BJP general secretary Amit Shah and BSP chief Mayawati were anxious of the ruling Samajwadi Party over using muscle power to rig the polls. They have demanded deployment of more central forces during the remaining phases of the election on May 7 and 12 (IANS)

Facebook, Google threatened_indianbureaucracy

Facebook, Twitter, Google,Microsoft and many other online services users have been hit by a serious new security flaw.

The flaw in two widely used security standards could give anyone access to your account information at any of the online services. According to Fox News, the flaw, dubbed ‘Covert Redirect’ by its discoverer, exists in two open-source session-authorization protocols, OAuth 2.0 and OpenID.

Both standards are employed across the Internet to let users log into websites using their credentials from other sites. Attackers could exploit the flaw to disguise and launch phishing attempts from legitimate websites.

According to the report, the biggest danger of Covert Redirect is that it could be used to conduct phishing attacks, in which cybercriminals seize login credentials, by using email messages containing links to malicious websites disguised as something their targets might want to visit.  (ANI)

India’s 1st pilot plant to convert high ash coal to methanol

PIB News Update: India has developed an indigenous technology to convert high ash Indian coal to methanol and established its first pilot plant in Hyderabad. This technology will help the country move towards the adoption of clean technology and promote the use of methanol as a transportation fuel (blending with petrol), thus reducing crude oil imports.

The broad process of converting coal into methanol consists of conversion of coal to synthesis (syngas) gas, syngas cleaning and conditioning, syngas to methanol conversion, and methanol purification. Coal to methanol plants in most countries are operated with low ash coals. Handling of high ash and heat required to melt this high amount of ash is a challenge in the case of Indian coal, which generally has high ask content.

For more details, Tirupathi Naidu Ch Deputy Manager, IGCC Dept. BHEL Corp. R&D ([email protected]) can be contacted.

In order to overcome this challenge, Bharat Heavy Electricals Limited (BHEL) has developed the fluidized bed gasification technology suitable for high ash Indian coals to produce syngas and then convert syngas to methanol with 99% purity. BHEL has integrated its existing coal to syngas pilot plant at Hyderabad with suitable downstream process for converting syngas into methanol. This pilot-scale project with a methanol generation capacity of 0.25 metric tons per day has been initiated by NITI Aayog and funded by the Department of Science and Technology (DST) under Clean Energy Research Initiative.

Currently, the pilot plant is producing methanol with purity of more than 99%. Scaling it up will help in optimum utilization of the country’s energy reserves and accelerate its journey towards self-reliance.
