In a major boost to the country’s power infrastructure, seven projects by the Power Grid Corporation of India were inaugurated and foundation stone was laid for a Rs 3,500 crore Green Energy project in Andhra Pradesh. These initiatives are expected to improve power infrastructure in states of Haryana, Uttar Pradesh, Uttarakhand, Assam, Manipur, Nagaland and West Bengal.

IndianBureaucracy, Gurugram, March 4, 2024 – In an effort to enhance country’s power infrastructure for greater self-reliance, Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi inaugurated seven projects executed by the Power Grid Corporation of India Limited (POWERGRID) today, representing a substantial investment of approximately Rs 4,000 crore. Additionally, the Prime Minister laid the foundation stone for an upcoming project at an investment of around Rs 3,500 crore.

The dedication of these seven projects and the foundation stone-laying ceremony is expected to greatly improve the power infrastructure in the states of Haryana, Central Western Uttar Pradesh, Uttarakhand, Assam, Manipur, Nagaland and West Bengal. In accordance with Power Ministry’s vision of One Nation, One Grid, One Frequency, these projects aim to ensure uninterrupted 24×7 power supply to all. They play a crucial role in fortifying the National Grid.

The event was witnessed by the Union Minister of Power and New & Renewable Energy, Shri Raj Kumar Singh, who participated in the ceremony from the Maharani Bagh Substation in New Delhi. This initiative aligns with the government’s commitment to advancing the nation’s power capabilities and strengthening critical infrastructure.

The laying of the foundation stone for the Transmission System in Kurnool’s Wind and Solar Energy Zones in Andhra Pradesh is a substantial step towards clean energy distribution, making  power systems more sustainable. Costing ₹3547 crore, it involves setting up a new substation, Kurnool-III, with 765/400/220 kV infrastructure. The aim is to swiftly integrate and move 4.5 GW of Renewable energy from Kurnool to other parts of India via the National Grid.

The Chandigarh GIS and Transmission Line project, costing ₹322 crore, established a 220/66 kV GIS in UT Chandigarh, along with a 220 kV D/c line to the 400/220 kV Panchkula (PG) substation. This enables Chandigarh to access its power from the Inter-State Transmission System (ISTS). This setup ensures a dependable power supply to the region. Notably, it is POWERGRID’s first-ever Green Field Digital substation.

In an effort to improve infrastructure and enhance power supply reliability in the state of Haryana and strengthen the Northern Grid, the Northern Region System Strengthening Scheme – XXXV has been implemented at a cost of Rs 124 crore. This initiative involves the establishment of a 400 kV D/c Mohindergarh – Bhiwani line, enabling the efficient transfer of power from the Mohindergarh HVDC substation.

Project Establish Transmission System for Construction by POWERGRID at a cost of Rs 1,165 crore was undertaken to improve power supply in Central Western Uttar Pradesh (UP). This included setting up a 765/400/220 kV GIS substation in Rampur, a 400/220/132 kV GIS substation in Sambhal, and related transmission lines. The project ensured a reliable power supply for Central Western UP, making the electricity network more robust and dependable.

The Meerut Simbhavali Transmission Limited project, costing ₹1050 crore, has brought significant benefits to the region. The implementation of a modern 765/400/220 kV GIS substation in Meerut and a 400/220/132 kV GIS Substation in Simbhavali, along with the associated transmission lines, has played a crucial role in meeting the current electricity needs of Meerut and the Simbhaoli area. Furthermore, these improvements are expected to address the growing demand for electricity in the region, ensuring a more reliable and stable power supply for both present and future requirements.

The Northern Region System Strengthening – XL project, completed at a cost of ₹360 crore, is an advancement in boosting the power infrastructure in the Northern region. The integration of Information and Communication Technology (ICT) at various substations has substantially expanded the transformation capacity of the Northern Grid by 3185 MVA. This will provide a dependable power supply across the region along with reinforcing the electricity grid.

The System Strengthening Scheme in Northern Region – XXXVII, built at a cost of Rs 380 crore, installed 400/220kV substation in Jauljivi. Connected via Longitudinally Integrated (LILO) to the Dhauliganga – Bareilly 400 kV D/c line, effectively addressed the current load demand in Jauljivi, Pithoragarh, Almora, and other load centers in the Kumaon region. Beyond immediate needs, the project is positioned to meet future load demands, enhancing the overall reliability of power supply in the Kumaon Region.

The North Eastern Region Strengthening Scheme – XII, with a project cost of ₹576 crore, has successfully increased the current carrying capacity of crucial transmission lines. This includes the re-conductoring of the 132 kV S/c Dimapur–Imphal line, 132 kV S/c Loktak–Jiribam line, 220 kV D/c BTPS – Salakati line, 220 kV D/c Alipurduar–Salakati line, and 400 kV D/c Siliguri – Bongaigaon line. This enhancement ensures improved power availability, reliability, and an overall better power scenario in the states of Assam, Manipur, Nagaland, and West Bengal.
