Coal Sector creates Substantial Employment Opportunities in 10 Years

India’s coal sector continues to play a vital role in fueling the nation’s energy needs while simultaneously driving significant employment growth. As on March 6, 2024, the country’s coal production has reached an impressive 900 MT, with projections indicating a milestone of over 1BT in the current financial year. This surge in production not only contributes to essential infrastructure development but also creates substantial employment opportunities, particularly in coal-rich regions across the country.

The coal-producing Public Sector Undertakings (PSUs) of the Government of India, notably Coal India Limited (including subsidiaries) and NLC India Limited, collectively employ a workforce of 369,053 individuals, including 128,236 contractual workers. Additionally, the sector supports approximately 3.1 lakh pensioners, underlining its significant impact on livelihoods and social welfare.

In recent years, Coal India Limited and its subsidiaries have undertaken extensive recruitment drives, adding 59,681 personnel to their workforce from 2014 until February 2024. Similarly, NLC India Limited has recruited 4,265 individuals during the same period, reflecting a commitment to bolstering employment opportunities.

The ongoing financial year has witnessed a further uptick in recruitment efforts, with Coal India Limited and its subsidiaries hiring 5,711 individuals under the Mission Mode Recruitment initiative. Concurrently, NLC India Limited has recruited 661 personnel during the same period, demonstrating a proactive approach towards addressing employment needs.

The surge in coal mining activities, driven by escalating demand, is expected to continue fueling employment growth in the years ahead. Beyond providing direct employment opportunities, mining activities also generate significant indirect employment, contributing to socio-economic development across the nation. As the coal sector continues to expand, it remains committed to fostering inclusive growth and transforming the lives of thousands through sustainable livelihoods.

50 MW Solar Project of SJVN to come up in Sontipur, Assam

The Chief Minister of Assam Dr. Himanta Biswa Sarma today performed Bhumi Pujan ceremony of 50 MW Solar Project being developed in Sonitpur, Assam by SJVN Green Energy Limited (SGEL), a wholly owned subsidiary of SJVN. The 50 MW Solar Project is being developed in Sitalmari village, in Barsola Block under Dhekiajuli Revenue Sector in Sonitpur district. It will be built at an estimated cost of Rs. 291 crores. The project will generate 101 million units of green energy in the first year and the cumulative energy generation over a period of 25 years will be about 2,319 million units. The energy generated will be supplied to Assam Power Development Corporation Limited at Rs. 3.92 per unit.

Chairperson & Managing Director, SJVN, Smt. Geeta Kapur informed that SJVN has set its footprint in Assam and that SJVN Green Energy Limited (SGEL), the renewable arm of SJVN, is developing three solar projects of capacity 200 MW, 70 MW and 50 MW, thus amounting to a total power capacity in the state of 320 MW. Among these, the foundation stone for the 70 MW Solar Project in Dhubri, Assam was laid by the Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi on March 4, 2024.

SJVN Limited, a Mini Ratna- Category-I and Schedule – ’A’ Central Public Sector Enterprise under the administrative control of the Ministry of Power, Government of India, commenced its journey on May 24, 1988 as a joint venture of the Government of India and the Government of Himachal Pradesh.

A listed entity, SJVN has commissioned thirteen projects totalling 2377 MW of installed capacity and 123 km Transmission Lines. SJVN has diversified into almost all forms of energy i.e. Hydro, Thermal, Wind, Solar, Power trading and Transmission.

Looking ahead, SJVN aims to grow by setting ambitious targets to achieve the Shared Vision of 25,000 MW installed capacity by the year 2030 and 50,000 MW installed capacity by the year 2040. This Shared Vision has been formulated in line with the commitment of the Government of India of having 50% of its power capacity from non-fossil-fuel-based energy sources by the year 2030.

NTRI celebrates remarkable achievements of Tribal Women on International Women’s Day

National Tribal Research Institute (NTRI) successfully organised the Aadi Vyakhyan Series – 5, a 2-day National Conclave on Tribal Women Achievers, with the theme – Empowering Tribal Excellence, in New Delhi on 8th and 9th March 2024.

The event, which celebrated remarkable achievements of Tribal Women on International Women’s Day, was attended by around 200 tribal women achievers from the fields of Art, Music, Literature, Sports, Handicrafts, Traditional Knowledge etc. Participants took part from Assam, Maharashtra, Rajasthan, Odisha, Mizoram, Chhattisgarh, Jharkhand, Gujarat, and Delhi.

Additional Secretary, Ministry of Tribal Affairs, Smt. R. Jaya delivered the inaugural address and congratulated the tribal women achievers and their efforts. She said that empowering tribal women through entrepreneurship is key to sustainable development. She further highlighted that the dream of Viksit Bharat will be realised by Sabka Saath, Sabka Vikas, Sabka Vishwas and Sabka Prayas, while stating that the tribal women achievers have shown the path towards ensuring this vision.

Special Director, NTRI, Prof. Nupur Tiwary welcomed the tribal achievers and congratulated them for their efforts. She said that National women conclave is an incredible start to honour and witness the remarkable achievements of tribal women. It will amplify the voices of women and their unsung stories. The strength, resilience and solidarity of the tribal women will inspire others and continue to support and uplift each other through this platform, she added.

Some of the achievers who spoke during the event included Smt. Durgabai Vyam (Padamshr Awardee, Gond Painting), Smt. Raimati Ghiuria (Queen of Millets), Dr. Anju Meena (International Body Building and Power Lifting Athlete National- Gold medalist) and Priyanka (National Women Kabaddi Player).

Smt. Durgabai Vyam shared her journey with the participants. Her talent and journey are the true testament of the rich cultural heritage of the country. Queen of Millets Smt. Raimati Ghiuria, a renowned farmer from Odisha shared her incredible achievements.

CIL and RRVUNL sign MoU for 4100 MW Power

Widening further its business diversification portfolio into thermal and renewable power generation, Coal India Limited (CIL) signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Rajasthan Rajya Vidyut Utpadan Nigam Limited (RRVUNL) for exploration and execution of 4,100 MW capacity power projects.

The proposed electricity generation would be through a mix of coal fired thermal power plant, solar projects, pump storage plant and wind projects. With Rajasthan exploring several opportunities for securing power to meet the growing energy demand, the entire generation would be acquired by the sunny state. Shri Bhajan Lal Sharma, Chief Minister, Rajasthan was present at the signing event, while, Shri Pralhad Joshi, Minister of Coal, Mines and Parliamentary Affairs, Shri R K Singh, Minister for Power, New and Renewable Energy attended in virtual mode. Shri Amrit Lal Meena, Secretary Coal was also present.

Dr. A K Samantaray, Executive-Director (Corporate Affairs and Business Development) CIL and Shri Devendra Shringi, Chairman and Managing Director, RRVUNL signed the MoU document formally on behalf of their respective companies.

The five proposed projects are 2×800 MW coal based pit-head power plant to come up in a coal bearing state, whose power would be drawn by Rajasthan. Others are a 2000 MW solar power project in RRVUNL’s solar park; 200 MW (2×100) pump storage project at Jawahar Sagar; 250 MW of solar project on the land acquired for Banswara TPP by RRVUNL and 50 MW wind project at the existing Ramgarh gas project, Jaisalmer.

As per the MoU stipulation RRVUNL shall ensure offtake guarantee from the projects and also acquire, possess, and transfer the developed land parcels to JVC. CIL shall carry out feasibility studies and conduct analysis for financial viability of each of the proposed projects.

CSIR-NIScPR | Workshop to promote Science Communication in Assamese

CSIR-National Institute of Science Communication and Policy Research (NIScPR) organised a virtual workshop on “Interactive and New Approaches to Communicate Science in Assamese” covering popular science writing, video, podcast and social media. The workshop sought to connect aspiring and experienced science communicators in Assamese to establish a network within the field. Leading and budding science communicators, teachers and researchers representing various universities, institutions and colleges from Assam attended the workshop.

The workshop commenced with an introduction by Dr. Paramananda Barman, Scientist, CSIR-NIScPR and coordinator of the workshop.  Prof. Ranjana Aggarwal, Director, CSIR-NIScPR delivered the welcome address. Prof. Aggarwal elaborated CSIR-NIScPR’s endeavours in science communication and its advocacy for science communication in Indian languages. She discussed the national initiative SVASTIK (Scientifically Validated Societal Traditional Knowledge), which is disseminating validated traditional knowledge in 17 Indian languages, and the popular science magazines by CSIR-NIScPR. Additionally, Prof. Aggarwal emphasised the significance of science communication in languages such as Assamese, Bodo and Manipuri.

The Chief Guest, Dr. Dinesh Chandra Goswami, Scientist G (Retd.), CSIR-NEIST, and a leading science communicator in Assamese, emphasised on the use of simple language to write a popular science article. He also talked about the importance of financial support to budding science communicators to engage them in science writing.

The technical session I of the workshop was on “popular science writing”. This session included talks by leading Assamese science communicators Dr. Ramesh Chandra Goswami, Dr. PC Tamuly and Dr. Paban Kumar Sahariah. Dr Ramesh Chandra Goswami mentioned the importance of popular science writing. He also shared his experiences to improve popular writings. Dr PC Tamuly emphasised about the importance of writing science fiction to engage and attract a large readership. He stressed the need to read a large variety of books to improve the writing skills. Dr. Sahariah further elaborated the need to encourage science writing in Indian languages. He also discussed the use of AI for translations and its pitfalls. Ms Arati Halbe, Managing Editor, Research Matters, gave insights on writing stories in English and Marathi. She mentioned the importance of using local examples and cultural practices to which people relate the most.

The technical session II of the workshop was on “Science filmmaking, social media & podcasts for SciComm”. Shri Vivek Kannadi of Science Media Centre, IISER Pune, highlighted the importance of films in communicating science through an interactive talk that covered important aspects of filmmaking such as writing a script and creating a storyboard. Dr. Paramananda Barman and his team used examples from the SVASTIK program and demonstrated how to create infographics, short videos/reels, and podcasts using free online tools. The daylong session ended with a brainstorming discussion on strengthening science communication and outreach strategies in Assamese.

SJVN inks Agreements for supply of 600 MW solar power to Rajasthan

SJVN Green Energy Limited (SGEL), a wholly owned subsidiary of SJVN, has signed a Long Term Power Usage Agreement (PUA) for 500 MW Solar Power and a Long Term Power Purchase Agreement (PPA) for 100 MW Solar Power, with Rajasthan Urja Vikas and IT Services Limited (RUVITL) in Jaipur today, March 10, 2024. The Power Usage Agreement is for 500 MW Solar Power from Bikaner Solar Power Project and the Power Purchase Agreement (PPA) is for 100 MW Solar Power from Rajasthan Solar Power Project, both for a period of 25 years.

Power Usage Agreement for supply of 500 MW to Rajasthan

Speaking about the Power Usage Agreement, Chairperson & Managing Director, SJVN, Smt. Geeta Kapur informed that under the Agreement, SGEL would supply 500 MW Power at a tariff of Rs. 2.57 per unit, from the 1,000 MW Bikaner Solar Power Project being developed by SGEL under Phase-II (Tranche-3) of the Central Public Sector Units Scheme.

This project is the country’s largest single-location project. Being developed at village Banderwala, in Bikaner, Rajasthan, the 1000 MW Solar Project is expected to generate 2,454.84 million units of energy in the first year and a cumulative energy of about 56,474 million units over a period of 25 years.

The project is being developed at a cost of Rs. 5,491 Crores and is expected to be commissioned by September 30, 2024.

With the signing of this PUA, SGEL has secured tie-up of the full project capacity of 1,000 MW, with 200 MW to be supplied to Uttar Pradesh Power Corporation Limited (UPPCL) and 300 MW to Jammu and Kashmir Power Corporation Limited (JKPCL).

Power Purchase Agreement for supply of 100 MW to Rajasthan

Under the Power Purchase Agreement signed today, SGEL will supply 100 MW Solar Power at a tariff of Rs. 2.62 per unit, from the project bagged by SGEL through competitive bidding for which Letter of Award was issued by RUVITL on October 6, 2023. The project is expected to generate 252 million units of energy in the first year and a cumulative energy of 5,866 million units over a period of 25 years.

The project will be developed on 387.56 acres of land of Sambhar Salts Limited at Nawa, Rajasthan leased in favour of SGEL for a period of 28 years. The project will be developed on Build, Own and Operate (BOO) basis at a tentative cost of Rs. 550 Crores.

The Long Term Power Usage Agreement and Long Term Power Purchase Agreement for a cumulative supply of 600 MW solar power were signed in the presence of Chief Minister of Rajasthan Shri Bhajan Lal Sharma in Jaipur today. Deputy Chief Minister, Rajasthan, Smt. Diya Kumari; Power Minister of Rajasthan, Shri Heeralal Nagar; Union Coal Secretary, Shri Amrit Lal Meena; Chief Secretary, Government of Rajasthan, Shri Subhash Pant; Additional Chief Secretary, Power, Government of Rajasthan, Shri Alok; and Director (Projects), SJVN, Shri Sushil Kumar Sharma were also present on the occasion.
