On September 19, 2024, during the conclusion of India Water Week 2024, the Hon’ble Minister of Jal Shakti, Shri C.R. Paatil, digitally launched the advanced “Bhu-Neer” portal. Developed by the Central Ground Water Authority (CGWA) in collaboration with the National Informatics Centre (NIC), this portal represents a significant advancement in groundwater regulation in India. Aimed at promoting transparency, efficiency, and sustainability, Bhu-Neer serves as a centralized platform for managing groundwater resources nationwide.

The Bhu-Neer portal provides users with comprehensive information on the legal framework governing groundwater extraction, including regulations at both state and national levels. Its centralized database offers easy access to details on compliance, policies, and sustainable practices, thereby empowering stakeholders to make informed decisions. Designed with user-friendly features, Bhu-Neer simplifies the process for project proponents seeking groundwater withdrawal permits. Key functionalities include a streamlined interface, a PAN-based single ID system, and QR-coded No Objection Certificates (NOCs). These enhancements mark a significant upgrade from its predecessor, NOCAP.

Aligned with the Hon’ble Prime Minister’s vision of Ease of Doing Business, the portal makes groundwater regulation a seamless and faceless process. Users can now leverage the platform to address groundwater-related queries, track application statuses, pay statutory charges, and access necessary clarifications. Open to public use, Bhu-Neer is a step forward in fostering sustainable water management while improving the regulatory framework for groundwater use in India.

Global Soil Conference 2024

Global Soil Conference 2024

Union Minister for Agriculture & Farmers’ Welfare and Rural Development, Shri Shivraj Singh Chouhan, addressed the Global Soils Conference 2024 in New Delhi via video conferencing. In his speech, he emphasized the interconnectedness of all beings and highlighted the Indian cultural belief in a universal consciousness that extends to soil, which he described as a living entity essential for life. He stressed the critical importance of maintaining soil health for the well-being of humanity, animals, and plants.

Shri Chouhan reflected on India’s agricultural progress since independence, citing the transformative impact of the Green and Rainbow Revolutions. From being a food-importing country, India now produces 330 million tonnes of food grains annually and earns $50 billion from agricultural exports. However, he acknowledged the growing challenges posed by soil degradation due to excessive use of chemical fertilizers, overexploitation of natural resources, and unstable weather conditions. Issues such as soil erosion, salinity, and nutrient depletion have reduced fertility, affecting agricultural productivity and farmer livelihoods.

The Union Minister highlighted government initiatives aimed at addressing these challenges. The Soil Health Card Scheme, launched in 2015 under Prime Minister Narendra Modi, has helped farmers understand fertilizer usage, with over 220 million cards distributed. Programs like the Pradhan Mantri Krishi Sinchayee Yojana-Per Drop More Crop focus on efficient water use and nutrient management. Additionally, the government is promoting organic farming, especially in the Northeast, and advancing natural farming practices to reduce reliance on chemical fertilizers. Integrated approaches such as crop diversification, agroforestry, and micro-irrigation were underscored as key strategies for enhancing soil health and reducing erosion.

Shri Chouhan also emphasized the role of scientific innovation and extension systems in bridging the gap between research and farming practices. Krishi Vigyan Kendras (KVKs), in collaboration with agricultural technology agencies, play a pivotal role in disseminating knowledge and skills to farmers. He announced the upcoming Modern Agriculture Chaupal initiative, which will facilitate direct interactions between scientists and farmers. The Minister encouraged youth and women researchers to actively participate in finding innovative solutions to soil health challenges, framing agriculture as a profitable and respectable profession.

Addressing the global dimension of soil health, Shri Chouhan pointed out its significance in achieving the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). He urged collaborative efforts among nations, scientists, policymakers, industry leaders, NGOs, and students to develop scalable solutions for sustainable land management. The Minister reaffirmed the Government of India’s commitment to promoting sustainable agriculture, resilient ecosystems, and food security for all, calling for collective action to ensure a sustainable future for humanity and the planet.

The event also saw participation from notable dignitaries, including Prof. Ramesh Chand of NITI Aayog, Dr. Trilochan Mohapatra, Chairperson of the Protection of Plant Varieties and Farmers’ Rights Authority, and Dr. Himanshu Pathak, Secretary of DARE and DG of ICAR. Their presence underscored the importance of collaborative efforts in addressing soil health challenges.

Coal India Limited (CIL), under the Ministry of Coal, has been awarded the prestigious Green World Environment Award 2024 in the Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) category and honored with the title of Green World Ambassador. This recognition highlights CIL’s significant contributions to CSR, particularly its efforts through the Thalassemia Bal Sewa Yojna, which provides curative treatment for over 600 Thalassemia patients through stem cell transplants (Bone Marrow Transplants).

CIL was the first public sector undertaking to initiate such a CSR project in 2017, offering financial assistance of up to ₹10 lakh per patient for BMT procedures. The initiative is implemented in partnership with 17 prominent hospitals across India, demonstrating a widespread and impactful commitment to public health.

The award was presented to Shri Vinay Ranjan, Director (Personnel/IR), during a ceremony at The Orangery, Kensington Palace, London, on 18th November 2024. Receiving the award, Shri Ranjan emphasized the inspiration it provides to further sustainability efforts for future generations.

CIL’s CSR initiatives are a testament to its commitment as a Corporate Citizen, going beyond its primary role as a coal producer and energy provider. The company, which supplies over 80% of India’s coal and supports 70% of the country’s coal-based power generation, also contributes 55% of total power generation and meets 40% of the nation’s primary commercial energy needs.

In addition to its CSR endeavors, CIL has adopted various measures to promote environmental sustainability, including:

  • Expanding green cover over mined-out areas.
  • Creating eco-parks and tourism spots.
  • Providing mine water to villages for domestic and agricultural purposes.

These initiatives underline CIL’s commitment to sustainable development alongside fulfilling India’s energy requirements.
