Shri Ajay Seth IAS (Karnataka 1987) presently Secretary- Department of Economic Affairs has been given additional charge as Secretary- Department of Revenue upon relinquishment of the charge of the post by Shri Tuhin Kanta Pandey IAS (Odisha 1987) .
Shri Ajay Seth is an exemplary civil servant with a distinguished career spanning over three decades. His dedication and expertise have significantly contributed to various domains, including finance, economic affairs, urban development, education, health, and water resources.
Beginning his journey in the Indian Administrative Service (IAS) in 1987, Shri Seth underwent training before assuming the role of Assistant Commissioner in Belgaum in 1989. His early years saw him handling key responsibilities in land revenue management and district administration. By 1991, he transitioned into finance, serving as Deputy Secretary in the Finance Department, where he honed his expertise in budget and expenditure management.
His leadership skills led him to the position of Deputy Commissioner in Mysore from 1995 to 1998, where he played a crucial role in district administration. He then served as Chief Executive Officer of Zila Panchayat, Bellary, furthering his contributions to rural development. In 2000, he returned to finance as Deputy Secretary in the Ministry of Finance at the Centre, progressing to Director in the Finance & Company Affairs Department by 2002. His tenure at the Asian Development Bank (ADB) in Manila from 2004 to 2008 as Adviser in Economic Affairs provided him with international exposure and expertise in global financial management.
Upon returning to India, Shri Seth took on significant roles in finance and governance, serving as Secretary and Principal Secretary in Karnataka’s Finance Department from 2008 to 2013. His leadership extended to commercial taxes and water resources before he became Principal Secretary in the Education Department, where he made impactful reforms in primary and secondary education from 2015 to 2017.
From 2017 to 2018, he served as Additional Chief Secretary in the Health & Family Welfare Department, contributing to policy improvements in public health. He then took charge as Managing Director of Bangalore Metro Rail Corporation Limited from 2018 to 2021, playing a pivotal role in urban development and infrastructure expansion.
Shri Seth’s illustrious career reached its pinnacle in May 2021 when he was appointed Secretary of Economic Affairs in the Ministry of Finance, Government of India. In this capacity, he has been instrumental in shaping the country’s economic policies, driving fiscal reforms, and ensuring financial stability. His remarkable contributions to governance and economic development stand as a testament to his vision, integrity, and commitment to public service.
