NLCIL has registered an all time high record in the history of the organization in respect of Overburden excavation, lignite excavation, power generation.
NLC India Limited, a “Navratna” Public Sector Enterprise, under the administrative control of Ministry of Coal (MoC), Govt. of India, has witnessed a sustained growth since its inception in 1956. NLCIL is a pioneer among the public sector undertakings in Mine cum Energy sector.

The year 2016-17 has been a successful and eventful year for NLC India Limited. The company has scaled new heights in its Physical performance ever since its inception in the areas of lignite mining and Power generation.

All the products registered a growth, over the performance of previous year. Lignite production registered a growth of 8.49% and Power Generation registered a growth of 14.06% during the year.
Production Highlights:
The following are the achievements during the year 2016-17.
- Total overburden removal from all Mines put together at 2060.70 LM3 (1702.76 LM3 is the previous highest in 2015-16) achieved during the year 2016-17 is the highest for any year since inception.
- Total Lignite production from all Mines put together at 276.21 LT (266.09 LT is the previous highest in 2013-14) achieved during the year of 2016-17 is the highest for any year since inception.
- Total Power Generation from all Thermal Power Stations put together at 22340.59
MU (19988.65 MU is the previous highest in 2013-14) achieved during the year of 2016-17 is the highest for any year since inception. - Total Export of Power from all Thermal Power Stations put together at 17718.00 MU (16956.40 MU is the previous highest in 2013-14) achieved during the year of 2016-17 is the highest for any year since inception.
Financial Performance for the year 2016-17 (First three quarters ending December 2016):
- Sales Turnover stands at Rs 5830.98 Crore upto the quarter ending Dec.’2016 as against Rs. 4820.91 Crore for the corresponding period in the year 2015-16 (previous highest), registering a growth of 20.95%.
- Total Income stands at Rs 6088.06 Crore upto the quarter ending Dec.’2016 as against Rs. 5235.63 Crore for the corresponding period in the year
2015-16 (previous highest), registering a growth of 16.28%. - Profit Before Tax stands at Rs 1279.04 Crore upto the quarter ending Dec.’2016 as against Rs. 1184.77 Crore for the corresponding period in the year 2015-16 (previous highest), registering a growth of 7.96% .
- Profit After Tax stands at Rs 852.35 Crore upto the quarter ending Dec.’2016 as against Rs. 723.82 Crore for the corresponding period in the year 2015-16 (previous highest), registering a growth of 17.76%.
- An Interim Dividend of 73.40% amounting to Rs. 1121.97 Crore has been paid to all share holders excluding Rs 228.40 Crore dividend distributed tax to Govt. of India. GoI’s share of the above dividend is Rs. 1002.20 Crore.
- Highest contribution to Exchequer of Rs 5006 crore (provisional)
- Most Competitive rate of interest of 7.53 % loan through reverse bidding for solar projects.
- Buy Back of 8.89 % of shares at Rs 99.
Status of Projects :
- With regard to Neyveli New TPS ( 2 x 500 MW), supplies and Erection works are in progress for Steam generator, Turbo generator and Balance of Plant Package. Mine development activities in progress (commenced in Sep,’15) in respect of Expansion of Mine-I (Area Expansion) & Expansion of Mine-IA (3 MTPA to 7MTPA).
- GOI sanctioned the Ghatampur Thermal Power Project (GTPP), Uttar Pradesh of NUPPL, JV of NLCIL (NLCIL’s Subsidiary) and UPRVUNL, UP (3×660 MW) in July 2016. Contract awarded for major packages and construction activities under progress.
- In addition to its existing 45 MW (further 6 MW under commissioning) Wind Power in Triunelveli, Tamil Nadu and 10 MW Solar power projects at Neyveli Tamilnadu, NLCIL has commenced the construction activities for a 130 MW Solar power plant at Neyveli.
- In respect of Solar Power Project in different parts of Tamil Nadu State (500 MW), task of finalizing the land required for the project is underway. With this contribution, NLCIL’s Green Energy initiative aggregates to 691 MW as of now.
- In respect of Solar Power Project in Odisha (250 MW), LOA will be issued after signing PPA with Government of Odisha.
- Under GoI’s Green Energy initiative, the installed capacity of NLCIL in the renewable Energy sector would be 4000 MW Solar Power and 251MW Wind Power by 2019.
- MOU entered with M/s DVC for acquiring a Thermal Power Project (2 x 600 MW in Phase-I), Raghunathpur, West Bengal . Joint Venture Agreement signed with
M/s DVC on 10th August 2016. GOI approval is awaited. - GOI allotted the Talabira II & III coal blocks, Odisha State (20 MTPA) in February 2016. Tendering process for engagement of Mine Development Operator (MDO) in Progress.
- GOI allotted the Pachwara South coal block, Jharkhand State (11 MTPA) in July 2013.Tendering process for engagement of Mine Development Operator (MDO) in Progress.
- With regard to Bithnok Lignite Mine (2.25 MTPA) cum Thermal Power Project, Rajasthan State (250 MW), Contract awarded for major packages for Thermal Project.
- In respect of Hadla Lignite Mine (1.9 MTPA) linked to Barsingsar Extension Thermal Power Project, Rajasthan State (250 MW), Contract awarded for major packages for Thermal Project.
- By completing the above projects, NLCIL’s Lignite mining capacity will be increased to 62.15 MTPA from 30.60 MTPA, Coal production to 31 MTPA and Power generation Capacity will be raised from 4295 MW to 8661 MW.
Future Plans
NLCIL forges ahead in all fronts and with its expansion activities the company is poised for substantial growth in the years to come. At the end of 2025, NLCIL expects to achieve a lignite mining capacity of 62.15 MTPA compared to a present capacity of 30.60 MTPA, Coal production of 31 MTPA and Power generating capacity to 20971 MW, which includes 4000 MW of Solar and 251 MW of Wind energy against the present capacity of 4295 MW.
