Indian Bureaucracy, New Delhi, April 30, 2025| Shri Samir Chandra Saxena has been appointed as the new Chairman & Managing Director (CMD) of Grid Controller of India Limited, popularly called as Grid-India, a public sector undertaking under the Ministry of Power. The Public Enterprises Selection Board (PESB) recommended Shri Saxena for this role on January 30, 2025, selecting him from three internal candidates. He succeeds Shri SR Narasimhan, the current CMD.

Presently serving as Director (Market Operations) at Grid-India, Saxena brings over 27 years of expertise in power market operations, renewable energy integration, and electricity market design. A Fellow of the Institution of Engineers (India) and Senior Member of IEEE, Saxena holds a Bachelor’s in Electrical Engineering from Aligarh Muslim University, an MBA from IIT Delhi, and a certification in power sector regulation from the Florence School of Regulation, Italy.

Saxena has been instrumental in implementing key initiatives like the Real Time Market (RTM), Integrated Day Ahead Market, and National Open Access Registry (NOAR). He also led the rollout of Market Based Ancillary Services and the Indian Electricity Grid Code (IEGC) 2023. His contributions include pioneering Security Constrained Economic Despatch (SCED) and capacity building for power system operators.

Grid Controller of India Limited (Grid-India), a PSU under the Ministry of Power, manages India’s National Grid with a generation capacity of upwards of 500 GW. It oversees a transmission network with an inter-regional capacity of 105,050 MW, connecting India with Bhutan, Bangladesh, Myanmar, and Nepal. Grid-India approved a Rs 4.74 crore dividend at its 15th AGM, showcasing financial stability. The organisation drives key market mechanisms like the Real Time Market (RTM) and National Open Access Registry (NOAR) for efficient electricity trading. Power Grid Corporation, its infrastructure partner, reported a Rs 46,913 crore turnover in 2024.
