Shri Bhuvnesh Kumar IAS (UP 1995), presently on Central Deputation and posted as Additional Secretary, Ministry of Electronics & Information Technology, is appointed as CEO – Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI), Ministry of Electronics & Information Technology.

The Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI), under the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology, administers Aadhaar, a 12-digit unique identity number for Indian residents. Established in 2009, UIDAI has enrolled over 1.38 billion individuals as of 2023, covering 99% of India’s adult population. Aadhaar facilitates secure identity verification, streamlining services like banking, welfare, and taxation. In 2018, the Supreme Court of India upheld the constitutional validity of Aadhaar, emphasising its role in welfare delivery while imposing restrictions on its use by private entities to safeguard individual privacy. UIDAI’s budget for 2023-24 was ₹2,085 crore, to create a more robust digital infrastructure and data security.
