The Indian Coast Guard (ICG) performed a successful medical evacuation of a Chinese crew member aboard the Panama-flagged vessel MT Hua Wei 8 off the Mumbai coast on October 14, 2023. The ICG Maritime Rescue Coordination Centre, Mumbai, which serves as the maritime search and rescue coordinator for the Indian Western Coast, received a distress call from the vessel on the evening of October 13, 2023. The request was for the medical evacuation of a 49-year-old Chinese crew member who was experiencing a stroke combined with Hemiplegia.

The MT Hua Wei 8 was en route from New Mangalore to Bin Qasim, Pakistan, and was positioned approximately 122 nautical miles from Mumbai. Due to the crew member’s critical condition, the vessel was altering course to head towards Mumbai for medical assistance.

In response to the emergency, the ICG deployed its ship C-439 for the medical evacuation. Despite challenging low-visibility conditions, the ICG successfully evacuated the crew member from the vessel at Mumbai Anchorage around 0830 hrs and safely disembarked him at the Mumbai harbor.

Upon arrival at the harbor, the patient was handed over to the local agent for further medical treatment ashore. This operation serves as a testament to the Indian Coast Guard’s unwavering commitment to ensuring maritime safety in Indian waters.
